so i changed my valve seals yesterday. and this morning started it and let in warm up and gas it a few times and it was still smoking. i am guessing piston rings at this point and i am really frustrated because all the hard work on this swap and nothing but problems, and FM7 only a few months away with few $$$$. so it is safe to say i probably am not going this year and this really sux.

My car does that too! Had a rebuilt head put on it 4 years ago and have a hard time believing the seals are already gone and like you am also thinking rings. If the PCV is plugged (or that line) you can get oil forced into the combustion cycle. I'm still scratching about all that stuff. If wet and dry compression test is similar at least you can eliminate ring problems.

Will bad oil rings show on a compression test? Have you tried the seafoam soak where you drop an ounce of it in each spark plug hole, roll the motor over a few times by hand and let it sit overnight?2008 Kia Rio- new beater

don't need a compressor to take a compression test... just a strong battery or charger. also, look at your plugs, they'll tell you alot about what's going on in the chamber.Trees aren't kind to me...

^Yucky, methinks.
I have my own mix of CC cleaner I use. Might not be kosher to those in the know, but it'll work really really well.
Dissolve a tablespoon of grease in 1/2 qt of gasoline. Then mix in 1 qt of high mileage oil. I use Penzoil. Rotate engine till all pistons are 1/2 way down in the bores. Fill them up. Let sit till either it all drains into the oil pan or you get bored silly. Then change the oil and either crank the rest out through the spark plug holes(the messiest/funnest way) or however you like, or if it all drained out proceed.
My reasoning for all the parts included. Gasoline - should be obvious and HM Oil - should have plenty of cleaning stuff in it while still not washing down the cylinder and ruining the ring seal. The grease is just to thicken it up a bit so it'll stay in the CC for a while.
Afterward I drive it in 4th and go through cycles of accel and engine braking to clear everything out.
Use at your own risk. It hasn't done any damage to my engines, but YMMV.Last edited by sketchman; 06-18-2013, 10:32 AM.Any difference that makes no difference is no difference.

Advance has compression testers. Get one. It probably your pcv. Plugs look ruff though. The head doesn't look too bad of shape. At least the oil was changed. So unless it was boosted I don't hear about rings having problems on these engines.

By my thinking, if the rings are gummed up and sticking causing them to not seal, it would help. I'd say it would be called aggressive by most people's standards to pour that much gasoline into your engine and let it sit, though, which is why I say use at your own risk.
But then I don't really know how much more or less aggressive it is to use Seafoam, but Seafoam is like $8+ for a little can. You can mix 1 1/2 quarts of what I use for under $8.
Sorry, didn't respond quick enough.Last edited by sketchman; 06-18-2013, 10:46 AM.Any difference that makes no difference is no difference.
