Everyone with a carb needs to block off their EGR and stop letting that mileage robbing, dirty exhaust back into the combustion chanbers of their engines.

Soo.. I learned something today. If you dunno what you're doing, don't try and tune by ear. Finally got a vacuum gauge (mounted in car). Thankfully, no vacuum leaks.
I was able to advance the timing for the first time (all the way and back about 1/3 inch, no ping through 70MPH range, any gear). It REALLY made an improvement.. I had a bit of lag if I floored it, that's gone now. I've been getting 31MPG pretty consistent, which was driving me nuts. I watch the gas gauge, and can pretty much tell when I'm getting good mileage without waiting a tank and filling. Usually shows 5/8 at 82 miles (which in reality is approx 30% empty, and I get 31MPG at that point).
Today I've gone 91 miles and it has yet to hit the 3/4 mark.. I'm hoping for 37+, but wintertime 35+ would make me very happy at this point.
I'm showing 21" vacuum in-gear, coasting to lower speed. Just sitting in neutral I'm at 19. No jumps or shakes in the whole range.
My throttle is starting to stick again.. I haven't had that happen in about a month and a half. I loosened all the mounting bolts back then, and installed a weakish return spring (so I wouldn't damage the linkage). Last week or so it's been really wanting to stick. Drives me insane.
Other than those little things, the Weber is still an improvement over stock by a mile. I'll update with this week's mileage, hoping it gets better!
Thanks again for all the help, everyone.

I had a Weber and had to file out the adapter. The butterfly was just scraping the edge of the adapter. Double check yours. It might just be scraping in cold weather.
I do not have that problem with my twin Mikunis and twin manual choke. It took me three tries to get the throttle cable the right length. But it's perfect now. I adjusted the pedal stop for full travel. Nice.Last edited by bravekozak; 12-16-2013, 09:16 PM.

Usually super has no ethanol, regular has 10%, and ultra has 5% since it's a 50:50 blend with super. And that's the way the octane cookie crumbles.

Only Alaska, Missouri and Montana allow ethanol free premium gas.
Thank-you congress for the Renewable Fuels Act of 2007.
Did I mention, you can also get non-ethanol super north of the border?
I use ethanol free in all my lawnmowers and cars.
I have never had any bad gas problems or symptoms.
I read about all of the ethanol problems online.
Pure gas.Last edited by bravekozak; 04-30-2016, 06:09 AM.

I have an 89 L with a 4 spd, 81 escort carb, no computer, no catalytic, rebuilt 93 b3, I have changed from the original jets of 95 primary and 107 secondary, to 90 primary and 95 secondary, this makes the car a turd but once up to speed it does really well, I tuned by ear this takes a while but following webers guidelines its not that hard, I run it just a little rich the car seems to like this. I usually get 45 mpg with driving 55 to 65 mph most of the time. I really like the tunability of the escort carb. Future changes are a 5spd, 13 inch rims/tires, and maybe this dickmeyer detuned cam I have, wish I had that when I rebuilt the motor.
Uglyed and SteveThe Steve, 89 L, 93 b3, 81 escort carbed, 5 spd now, metro 13s, 88 323 exh mani, very comfy Suzuki forenza front seats...47 mpg as long as it is above 40°! LOL!

I have a 93 GL with a 5 spd, 81 laser twin Mikuni carbs, no computer, no catalytic, rebuilt 85 B6. I have not changed the original jets as they were speced for a 1.5L Mazda E5 engine. There is instant response from the throttle. I tuned them with a Crypton multi carb balancer. Future changes may be a Chevy 2.8 V6 engine. I was doing some measurements at the junkyard on Friday. One of the eight Fieros has a V6 engine in it. I was checking the dimensions, transmission size and axle lengths. If I can fit the engine backwards, I have the perfect intake manifold for it. My own.Last edited by bravekozak; 04-30-2016, 06:16 PM.
