I bought a DGEV a while back and never could get it to work right. Once I got all the vacuum leaks fixed (by making my own gaskets as the ones that came with it wouldn't seal worth a crap.. and using indian head sealant) I got it to run halfway decent but still had problems when it would transition from the idle to the main circuit. After trying about a dozen different jet combinations and about a dozen different float adjustments it still wasn't quite right.
I did make good improvement by shaving a little bit off of the throttle plate. It looked as if it was too low and wasn't letting air flow across the port properly which was causing it to fall flat on its face (and sometimes backfire) under light acceleration. That's because it was leaning out too much between the idle circuit and the main circuit. If I gave it more gas it would smooth out and work great!
Then I decided to try an Escort carb which is actually a Weber carb as well but different from the DGEV. I got a used one for $15 shipped, a rebuilt kit for $15 shipped and I had to buy an idle mixture screw (as it was missing) for about $12 (mostly shipping as it was shipped from Italy). Then I rebuilt it and slapped it on and it's been AWESOME ever since. I was able to modify the factory air cleaner to work and I could probably do the same with the DGEV air cleaner if I wanted to.
The Escort carb also has two huge advantages over the DGEV. The first is that it has a fuel cut-off solenoid. If you leave your computer intact you could wire in a relay and have it actually cut off fuel during decel to save a bit of gas (although I don't have that setup just yet). The second advantage is that you don't have to take the damn thing apart to get to the jets. You remove the air cleaner and they are right there.
I used it in combination with a wide band to tune it and got it up to 44MPG (mixed city/hwy). Since my EGR system is still intact and working I'm not too worried about pre-detonation and have NEVER heard any pinging - even when cruising around at a 17:1 A/F ratio. I'm going to have to enrichen things a bit though as it's running like dog poo during these cold winter days. It doesn't like to take much throttle until it warms up for a few minutes and even fully warmed up it has a bit of lag at moderate throttle. I'll get it worked out though.
You might want to first check the fuel hose between the frame line and the fuel filter before condemning the carburetor. I've heard of these collapsing internally and restricting fuel flow. Go ahead and put a new filter in while you're at it.
