  • vibration at freeway speed - free play in rack/pinion

i have a nasty vibration at 60/70 mph. I jacked up the front end and I think i have way to much play in the steering. the play is equal on both left and right tires. Since it is the same on both tires I have to assume the rack and pinion is loose since all the linkage seems tight and isn't moving. Does this seem reasonable and how can i get in there and tighten things up?

    thanks,
    dan

hmm.. after getting both wheels off the ground at the same time the problem seems very obviously to be lower ball joints. Interesting how I didn't notice that until both tires were off the ground.

is it dangerous to drive with bad lower ball joints? I'm making a 4 hour drive tomorrow.

    thanks,
    dan

well i made it back alive on windy mountain roads and highway driving at 80 for 8 hours round trip so i guess i'm feeling pretty good to be alive.

thing shook like a mo-fo though. will get them replaced right away now.

Could be a bad tire too! Tires always seem to vibrate right around that speed when they are out of balance or have a broken belt.

nah, it's definitely balljoints. i can wiggle those wheels around quite a bit!

thats actually a possibility too so i'm definitely going to check that out once i get the ball joints replaced.
