There is nothing making that nut want to turn as far as the direction the bearing is spinning goes. Stake nuts work fine, just like they do on the front axle. Problem is no one wants to buy new ones every time like your supposed to and they get 'staked out' as i call it. I love the castle nut and cotter pin system.
As far as new nuts not threading on i had the same issue. I bought new ones from rockauto. I had messed up the threads on one spindle and ordered a die. Ran the die over each spindle (both spindles on my car are the reverse thread) and they threaded on. I think the threads get messed up from removing the nuts without fully unstaking the nut and it messes the threads up but the old nut keeps working but a new one wont.

If the staking is not tight, the parts frett back and forth till the stake isn't there any more.
Drill your spindles and use 1993 nuts, these and the earlier stake type are available as a Dorman part from your local "automart"

Yes, i had one come loose on our trip that i hadnt staked well enough, it just can happen on either side, it doesnt really matter which way the wheel normally turns.
I didnt know you could buy the 1993 stuff new, how do i go about finding those? Just ask for 1993 spindle nuts?

Just checked with Dorman, they no longer list the 1993 castleated nuts, guess one would have to slot "stake" nuts.

2 minutes with an angle grinder gets you there.

Dorman part numbers, rear spindle nuts 1988-1992 Festiva

                        Right rear:. 615-103
                        Left rear:. 615-104

Most "automart" stores carry Dorman products and can order these in for you.

I'm having the same issue finding replacement nuts can't get the right but AutoZone or other part places if one knows the part number or thread specs that would be helpful
