Picked up a 88 LX yesterday with all the options and as you can see it looks pretty good, well it has lived it's whole life here in the rust belt and it is badly rusted, she's not going back on the road but i thought i would share my find, she don't know it yet but i'm going to turn her into a stripper. OH ya i forgot to mention, the car doesn't run so i did the normall tricks, charged up battery, fuses, checked the gas looks good quarter tank, crank it, no go, pulled the breather cover, jacked the throttle, no gas, checked gauge, quarter tank, jumped out, well as fast as an old fat guy can move, knocked on the tank, well heck i'm out of gas, called the P.O. said found out why your car would not run, he just laughed when i told him the gauge and tank didn't match. Funny how much easier it is to start with gas in the tank

That car is considerably 'less dead' than one an 80 year old woman around here still drives daily. You can see through every corner of hers and yet the car refuses to die. She figures the gas mileage is improving as it continually gets lighter due to the 'cancer' (rust) that has been eating at the car for 20 years.
There is no substitute for oil-spraying cars every year. Crown and Rust-Check (Canada) are the better ones and tar-based and no-drip oils only make the situation worse when moisture creeps or gets trapped underneath the coating. A local fellow swears by regular application of ATF as a moisture barrier because it displaces water and continually creeps.

What is that thing that looks like an accessory plug in the hatch jam? I would have a set of historic tags on that thing today!

Ford Fester, thanks for the comp.

Bert, on the outside she looks good, but the under side ah heck i'll runout and take a picture.

georgeb, ding ding ding we have a winner, yup it's a 12 volt outlet so when i go fishing i can plug in a light, or a plug in for the electric knife to cut up the fish i catch, it has a multitude of uses.

                  Someone had to ask.

To the OP- I would not, under any circumstances consider that car pretty rusty, unless it's the underside that's bad. Seriously, I need to take a pic of one that runs up and down the roads here everyday. Not even sure what is holding that car together, but it still goes.

Congrats on the pick up, BTW. :thumbleft:
