  • Pics of my 323

Here are some pics of my new-to-me 1987 323LX. 145K miles.

This is the old airbox I just removed.....

    ...to install this.

    Detail of the brackets used.

The funny thing is that I had all the stuff I needed to do this just laying around. MAF adaptor is from Rocketman BTW.

Car needs a disty o-ring, valve cover gasket, probably a cam seal. PS pump is leaking so I took the belt for it and the A/C off. Will try to re-seal the pump eventually; I bought a seal kit. Installed two new shifter bushings as well. Very minimal rust issues (trunk behind LR wheel, and under car), which have been taken care of.

Edits: found two dead mice in stock airbox.
Driver seat is actually in fine condition, under that cover. Just some wear on the fabric of the outside seat bolster, but no tearing.
I will be buying a dash cover. There is a place that still sells specific ones for the 323; it even asks if you have the dash clock or not! (It does.) http://www.autoanything.com/dash-mats/dash-designs-dashtex-custom-dashboard-cover

OK on the hwy, but I think they are original, and with 145K I'll replace them soon. The battery is from April 2010, so it'll get a new one before winter. Probably get a Honda battery, for a smaller profile.

Next year I'll put the headers off Matthew on it.

          Let's see those pics Damkid!

Rear seatback on my 323 has 70/30 split for pass-thru items in the trunk. Trunk is quite large. Seatback also has a fold-down armrest. Courtesy lights in the doors, and an ignition-switch light that stays on for 15 seconds after you close the door. Escort-style dome light. No cupholders! This must be remedied forthwith. Also gonna try to find a better rear half for the center console; i.e. large storage compartment, armrest. Early 626s and MX-6s would be good places to start.

Snagged a better center console at the JY today: THREE cupholders total! Pics tmw. I took the front half of a 97 Protege console and mated it with the back half from a 95 Protege console, same color, same basic design so they just snapped together. Hafta drill four holes to mount it, and it will (almost) look like it was factory. Plus it comes with an Escort-style shift knob and boot, replacing the slightly lamer stock pieces. Mating the 97 and 95 also gave me a usable armrest. The 97 back half is much shorter and the storage space inside is about half of the 95's. Makes the interior look a little more modern and classy, yet still fits in to the overall look.

Basically you can mate up any combination of Protege front and rear console halves from 1995-1998. There are differences in style and features among the years and the trim levels, it seems. It might be possible to mate the rear half of the 95-98 to a 91-94 Escort or Protege front half. I have a 92 Protege front half to try that on, but no Escort front half.

I also grabbed a couple extra rear halves, and two single-DIN storage cubbies, the ones that would fit where the radio is if your car didn't have one. Pics later.
