  • Carby Car's Bucket List

I've had my faithful rust bucket for over 4 years now. I saved Carby Car from certain death at a junkyard; bringing home one of the dirtiest non running cars I've ever seen.

    FB_IMG_1468871160932.jpg

Slowly but surely, the old man came together. He rocked a white hood for a long time until PU241 matched me up with another non matching but still blue hood.

    From original blue:

    To white then blue again:

This car became so much more than a car to me. I redid the interior, replaced the alternator belt more times than I care to think about, and generally just drove the heck out of it. I dropped a 5 speed out of a wrecked car in a junkyard to replace the awful 4 speed. I've replaced the water pump and worried myself to death over the rust all over the body that had always been there and was just growing more and more. Carby car has always been dependable, never ever left me stranded somewhere that I couldn't find help. I know that car's ins and outs better than I know myself.

A few weeks ago, my grumpy old man was hoisted on the life for a routine oil change. I've been having engine issues, typical tired B3 issues paired with a 1.6 carb, and so we had been preparing for an engine swap too. But this time, we discovered that the rust has gone too far. It's too much rust to save my car as is; we don't have the resources, skillset, or money to rebuild the frame.

So that brings up the bucket list. There is a future plan for Carby car, although it will never be a daily driver again. So I now want to take carby car to all the most awesome places I can find. I'm also taking a little inspiration from the Parked Next To thread. I'm listing the coolest things, places, cars, and other Festivas that I can find, and taking the road trips and parking next to as many of them as I can. I'm currently compiling the lists and will post when closer to completion. Want to join in on the fun? I'd love to park next to you!

Carby Car -- '89 Festiva, Escort carb/Rocketman adapter. FM8 Best Beater and Bad Luck award, FM9 Fan Favorite, July 2016 FOTM, and overall a crusty grumpy old man (Bucket List thread in Photo Gallery)
    Pearl -- '91 B6 Festiva
'97 Aspire--yeah i'm about that Aspire life, no it's not a brake swap (yet)

Parked next to gauge_half_inch's turbo car in 2012 possibly?

Gauge_half_inch's Verde in our engagement pictures.

Forever my favorite Festivas to park next to.

Subscribed. This is a great idea. I'm looking forward to more great adventures.
Driving for me is neither a right nor a privilege. Driving is my passion, as it was for the people who invented the automobile, the people who paved the first roads and the people who continue to improve the automobile. Please respect this passion.

First mission to accomplish: Covered/Vintage Bridges.

I have many fond memories of driving around as a child with my parents in their Festivas. That translated to adulthood, where I continued to find more and more in Indiana. I've chosen 7 of my favorite bridges to visit.

Norris Ford Covered Bridge, Rush County, IN
Forsythe Covered Bridge, Rush County, IN
Moscow Covered Bridge, Rush County, IN
Offutt Fort Covered Bridge, Rush County, IN
Smith Covered Bridge, Rush County, IN

        Hays Bridge, Hancock County, IN
County Line Bridge, Hancock County, IN

Hoping to accomplish these soon, within the next few weeks. I'm still compiling other lists, but this was my first one to completion. Also considered hitting all the covered bridges in Indiana, but that's somewhere around 96-98 and ain't nobody got time for that. Just decided to keep it simple and of course, I can always add more to this later.

Thanks Charlie! Pedro is actually one of the first Festivas on my list to park next to! Hoping to get that list compiled soon...but there are so many great cars out there.

Come on out to Iowa and we will hit the Bridges of Madison Co. one of them is where Clint Eastwood and Merrill Streep first met in there movie.
An idea can turn to dust or magic, depending on the talent that rubs against it.

I thankfully already got some pics next to CarbyCar during our convoy to Lakestiva, but you are invited to come out and get more if you ever head West!

I live on a farm, you can get some picture in the goat pen while you are here!

UNFORTUNATELY plans have now been delayed. I was all excited about going and getting my bridge pictures in this weekend. I JUST rolled over 225,000, and was almost at work today when I saw steam rolling from the hood. Got it parked, let it cool off, and came back to this...

                        20160802_105615.jpg

Oil in the coolant. That sweet smell hit me in the face and I knew. The engine was shady when I got the car 90k ago, so the fact that it's lasted this long is amazing in itself. Hoping we can gently limp this guy home tonight and probably swap an engine instead of road tripping this weekend. My poor baby.
