  • Am I insane? Carby B3 W/Weber + Rear Turbo

I've been going back and forth on this for a few days.. a local junker sells turbos for $9/ea, and they have lots of Subarus and Volvos.. I think they even have an old Porche 944 with a HUGE turbo sitting in it (like half the size of a B3 hahaha). I'd find the smallest turbo I could.

For a rear turbo.. you just replace the muffler (or leave it on?), put the turbo there, run oil lines.. and make a custom air intake for the Weber? Maybe weld together a box and fit it on top the carb?

How plausible would this be? Large air jets, I'd suppose.. less fuel or more? I'm thinking about this more for economy [currently 34MPG at 63MPH average] (and the occasional wild hair), not looking for a power monster.

    Am I insane?

Do you have a 4 spd or 5 spd transmission?
I just saw you have an 88 5 spd. Is this for it?

Not insane, totally doable but in order to use boost on a carb you will always run rich when not in boost. I was planning on a turbo or supercharger on my build but decided to go with nitrous because i can tune the carb normal and get decent mpg and when i want the power adder i just turn it on. I have not got to the point of adding nitrous to my car yet because im still getting the engine correct and just had a roller rocker catastrophe and destroyed my custom valves and stage 3 cam.

Yeah, I saw that! Sorry to hear you're having trouble. Hope you get her back on the road soon.

That's the one thing I wish I could change.. find some way to restrict fuel usage when running at 2k RPM or less. It seems it uses the same fuel matter if I'm going 40MPH average with slow starts, or 70 average with quick-merge-acceleration. I had the same trouble on the Sprint.. I could drive in 5th gear at 30MPH all day long, still never got a lick better mileage. Only mattered when I was going 75-80+, it would drop to about 36MPG.

Anywho.. Turbo is possible? I'd use nitrous, believe me, but I hate the thought of literally seeing my money go down every time I break the seal. Atleast when it's running rich, I don't see the cost until the next fill-up. Plus.. how many turbo-Weber Festivas are there?

I have a holley 2bbl that was modified by Matt Dickmeyer for a blow thru setup, if you're interested. It would need adapted to the stock manifold though...like any carb.

Already have $350 in the carb setup, and only about 3k miles. Kinda wanna keep the Weber for now. :p
But for the sake of argument, would you PM me a price, if it isn't too much trouble? If you still have it in a few months, you never know..

You will need to research a blow thru carb. Funny things happen if you boost a regular carb.

                        +1

That's why turbos become more popular after fuel injection became industry standard.

Hey hey, don't give me ideas! Turbo carb on a budget LOL. Wouldn't the Home Depot flex hose running down the side from carb to manifold be sexy?
