Anyone install an aftermarket cruise sytem on their Festy?

I'm really tired of trying to maintain speed on my constant hour+ highway trips, and suspect it will also help with fuel economy.

    Searching didn't tell me much.

Yesterday I went to local JY looking for an AC condenser for my Dodge Decoder . I spotted a 93 Festiva.

I just returned from pulling the cruise control off the Festy. Took lots of pictures while I was doing it.

Everything and all connections were still intact EXCEPT, there was one small wire hanging loose under the dash. It’s a small gray shielded wire marked “to vehicle speed sensor.” I gritted my teeth Seinfeld style and said, damn!

I didn’t find anything that looked like it could be a speed sensor under the dash, under the hood, in the speed-o cable or on an axle The wire was bundled so that it obviously connected to something inside the car rather than anywhere else.

I did get the speedometer cable. It has a device in line that was located under the hood. The device, a metal “knot” is about 1 inch in diameter, and 1 inch long. Cable goes in one end, out the other. Cable sheath is swaged or crimped to the knot. NO connectors or evidence that anything connects to it in any way. My 90 doesn’t have anything like it on the speed-o cable.

The car didn’t have a tach but I’m thinking maybe it might use tachometer pulses rather than a separate vehicle speed sensor for input. Maybe the wire connects to the tach wire at the inst. cluster? It started to rain. Again? Still? I had to quit but will go back to get AC condenser and look at the Festiva cluster closer. Here's a pix of the stuff.

              Any ideas?

I have been looking for a cruise control too!

I only have a vague idea on how cruise controls function. If you ever run across another one, drop me a line. I have everything but cruise. Then I would be able to say that my $248 eBay Festiva was "fully loaded". Many thanks.

my 1991 Festiva GL has a cruise control module on it, but it allmost looks jerry rigged or something. Its very interesting. Works allright, but very old, and very interesting. I kind of suspect it may have been aftermarket from the original model, but installed by the original retailer or something.

                    mazda cruise

There is a guy on eBay who is selling Mazda cruise control switches.
                    eBay item #250015390978.
                    He has 4 left.
I believe it should fit the stock Festiva switch hole based on the measurements he gave me.
I need to make a wire that would go from this switch to the cruise stalk. I still need the connector wire from a 626. The light will idicate whether the cruise is activated or not.

what about the cruise module from a 626, is that built into the computer or controlled seperately, if its seperately, we may be able to get it to work in festiva.

Escort cruise control is very similar to a Festiva, I'll bet it would work.

                          626 connector

I removed the cruise control connector out of an old 626 at the wreckers and it fits perfectly in one of the NOS cruise stalks that sold on the bay a few months ago. Now I just have to figure out the wires with my multimeter. The stalk has no on/off switch for the cruise, so I am wiring the power wire to the 84-85 Mazda RX-7 switch. There sure are a lot of different cruise contol switches being offered on the bay right now.

I have the cc module from a 626, but lack the speed sensor for the speedo cable and someplace to plug this damn computer that came with it in.

I've had this for almost three years now and if I don't install it, she's going to sell it back on eBay.

The speed sensor on the Escorts and some other models of mazda is the same.
