Escort map lights install

Got a little ahead of myself but it is ok

First remove old int light



Then cut away a small amount of your headliner

Use your new map light for dimensions DON'T cut out too much ---- less is better in this case



The two screws are the new holes for the light plus you need to use one of the old holes also.



As for wiring it can be done wrong this is what I did and had to swap wires around.
Here is the correct way


When you get your map light leave enough wire to make connections about 3''.

Wire the white/red stripe from car to blue/red stripe from light then
wire red/blue stripe from car to red/white stripe from light.
Then install with 3 screws.



Install covers




Presto you have int lights with map lights.

Pretty simple mod, and comes in handy alot.

just did this a couple of weeks ago.. any 91-96 escort has this style of domelight and the JY's are filled with them!

just a note, if you do connect the wires wrong, it doesnt hurt anything. you just have to rewire it and it works great! also, my car had holes for all three screws, but from what i've heard some cars dont have all three holes. two screws will hold it up though.

Thanks for the write up Mr Barker! I'm pretty sure that all three holes are there. It's just that the third one is behind the headliner. All that has to be done is to cut the headliner away to reveal it.

The same design of dome light can be found in some Mercury Tracers and early Mazdas too. The nice thing about these ones is that they are plug and play... no wiring changes needed.

Regardless of which route you decide to go it is well worth the work.

John and I pulled like 8 of these (and like 5 cargo lights) at a yard one time, then picked out the couple best ones. The guy looked a little funny when we checked out with a pile of dome lights! I was planing on selling them to folks, but I think I ended up just giving them all away.

my install

I had to remove my headliner because I could not fish the rear washer tube up the "C"-pillar.
Since I had it out, I decided to surgically install my Escort map light. It is easy to use a hole punch when the headliner is lying on the ground. Here is a picture of my surgical operation:

Great writeup. My dome light is cobbled right now. Some of the contacts became loose, so I rigged it so it would work, with the intentions of replacing it later. I think I am going to convert it over rather than replace it with another original. Thanks for letting us all know how easy it is.

Oddly enough, the stock Festiva dome light is installed off center + they had to drill an extra mounting hole at the factory + it tends to warp with only two corner support.

The escort dome light uses the factory three point mounting holes already in the ceiling support + has map lights + you don't have to reach as far + is centered on the headliner + comes in a variety of colours to match your interior.

I just did this today myself, after a trip to the JY. Casper doesn't have a headliner (yet), which made it a lot easier. No wiring up there either. I just ran the wires to the battery in the trunk, taping them with duct tape on the roof, down inside the C-pillar covers and into the trunk.

BTW I got mine out of a Mercury Tracer hatchback. Several different Fords seem to have this light.
