I'm getting ready to insulate the cabin. The way I understand it,
Start with a sound dampener, like Mass Loaded Vinyl or Butyl Rubber (preferably non-asphaltic):
The most recognized brand in automotive soundproofing and heat control in the world. Learn more about reducing unwanted noise and vibration.

          or
B-Quiet Ultimate Sound Deadener helps break up unwanted stress-causing sound waves and vibrations to improve the acoustics of your vehicle. Order it now!

Then apply thermal insulation, such as a fiber material or Closed Cell Foam
The most recognized brand in automotive soundproofing and heat control in the world. Learn more about reducing unwanted noise and vibration.

What thicknesses would you guys recommend for roof, doors, quarter panels, firewall, and floor?
          Outer skin area ~100ft^2?

I removed my door windows and slid down as large an unbroken sheet of butyl as possible.
I did the same for my ceiling, and all the exterior panels in my car.
My car is so quiet now. The doors shut like a caddy.
Use only butyl seconds from eBay.
When you walk around the car and tap your knuckles on the body, the only hollow sound is on the two front fenders and hood.

I have a hood insert that I need to install.
                Everything else is deadened.

They say that the Chrysler 300 is the quietest vehicle on the road.
Well, my Festiva will give it a run for the money.

Hey Brave, I like the sound (no pun intended) of butyl seconds off eBay. I will go on there tonight and look for some. What do you estimate the total weight of what went on your car? I clicked on some links to sound deadening companies and couldn't find a complete package for a Festiva so I looked at packages for Civics and saw weights in the 100 lb neighborhood. That's a little more weight than I would want to add to my cars.

Bought 50ft^2 of KillMat for ~$60. Gonna put that in soon. Right now I'm swapping the rear and quarter glass from my first car into the new one because they have the stickers I like already on them and I need the horsepower.

Is there a good way to remove paint from a color-matched bumpercover? I want them to be black on my white car.

I worked for six months at a major automotive bumper painting plant.
They painted directly over the original paint with a completely different color.
They used electrostatic guns to ensure paint wrap.
They also used special acid-catalyzed heat cure paints that required an oven bake in order to make the special polymers crosslink.
The only way you could tell it was re-painted was to get in an accident with abrasion.
I have seen some bumpers painted over a dozen times.
We put microtomed cross sections under a microscope.
