IIRC, rocketman hadn't finished his BP plenum, or did he?
Does the Miata use a BP motor? I don't know these things.

you would have to make a whole new intake manifold if you moved the throttle body position, the intake runners inside are stepped to catch the air comming in from that side.

Can't spend much time on the internet today.
This is going to be boss, Hoss.
Your VAF is in the perfect spot...it's your throttle body that needs to moved from the back wall of the intake plenum, to the front wall.
Should be easy...i'll get a BP throttle body gasket.
The air cleaner adapter is in the works, the center 3" hole can be located off center in a number of directions, i'll have a working prototype soon, with a hole in the center.

3"OD looks right...shoot a side pic so I can see the bolts. Is there a third bolt below the opening? I could do a flat plate adapter that bolts right on.
The element is an open cell foam...Edlebrock does sell a replacement for about $12 IIRC. The one in it has seen some backfires from my F150 motor. It's still useable. I'll look at work, to see if we have any of this blue fiberglass mat that's about 1" thick. It's an excellent filter material used for air compressors.
The air cleaner is a triangle, as seen in the pics, with curved sides and corners. It's 11.5" wide at it's widest...8.5" from the center of the 'front point' to the center of the 'back' straight. The direction you point the corners doesn't matter.
There's a wire cage inside to keep the element from sucking in. I could fab something with smaller diminsions, but making a wire cage is hard. You may notice the one on my Sammy is modified to be much flatter.
A flat plate adapter would be easier, and make the cleaner about 2" tall. You might even be able to use your first 30 deg elbow and relocate the VAF to the other side without relocating your battery. The smooth wall plastic plumbing is much better than the original flex duct with ridges.

You know, Id like to try that. Id be happy to at least pay the shipping. I can clean it up too. Thanks a lot. Ill go get the O.D. on the VAF. Can you get replacement paper filters for it ? What are the other measurements on it ?

Well...it would be free. I could ship it with in a week, even knock the rust off and spray paint it silver.

The straight in filters are even better than the cones. This one has a nylon pre-cleaner, the element never seems to get dirty at all. I just replace the nylon; it's a hair care product available at Walmart for $1.28.
I have one of these Proflow air cleaners that you can have.
It has some surface rust on the inside, but it will clean up okay. I can make an adapter ring for it, to fit directly to your VAF intake with set screws. The air cleaner is only about 3" thick. You could just play with it, to see if it would angle in okay. That 90 deg elbow in front of the VAF is a restrictor.
Just sayin'; if you want to try it out. I'd need to know the exact OD (outside diameter) of the VAF inlet. I assume it's round without irregular things around it.

The new U-bend is better than the first one.
Fantastiva will run okay with it.
At some point in the future, you could switch your air box to the driver's side. The air coming thru the piping actually has momentum, because the air molecules have mass. Even thou the mass is really small, it's still real.
I'll try this for an example. You're driving in a car going 20mph, and you cut a u-turn. You make it around okay, headed in the opposite direction, but you're not going 20mph any more.
Run it the way you have it, then make the change. I'm certain you'll notice an improvement in power and throttle response, after the mod.
Of course, Fantastiva will be much faster than ole Festus, even with your current system.
But later on, it would be a great mod for you. You could try it on your B6 blue Festiva, first, if it's easier, just to see how you like it.
