              matter/anti-matter intermix valve = Head Gasket failure
              After Alt/water pump belt failure went unnoticed a few minutes too long. Blew the head by-pass hose, which from the looks of it should have been replaced long ago!

                            update

                            Operation Fesserection is well underway;

                            Pu241's 1990 LX suffered a hemorage of the cranial quarantine plate (head gasket).

                            Removal and inspection of the cylinder head revealed significant warpage of the head, in excess of 0.010" (maximum allowable is 0.006"). The warpage was significant enough to cause binding of the camshaft. These two factors have caused me to determine that the cylinder head is not salvagable.

                            Fortunately, I had a spare cylinder head. Gasket surface deflection is less then 0.001". Valve sealing is better than the original head, but a quick valve job will improve that still. Got the valves ground tonight, the seats will be addressed this weekend.

                            Both heads had distorted valve springs, but I was able to assemble a good set of eight springs from the sixteen. New valve stem seals are a given at this point.

                            Gasket surface will be dressed to ensure a good seal to the cylinder block. Incidentally, the block itself suffered no damage. It's gasket surface deflection is also less than 0.001", and it's finish is unmarred. The piston crowns are clean and show no signs of heat fatigue. The cylinder walls are bright, smooth, and the crosshatch is still visible, with no ridge at the top.

                            While she is down for heart surgery, she'll also get a new water pump, timing belt and tensioner, valve cover gasket, thermostat, crank and cam seals, and spark plugs.

                            Additionally, I did find a fractured upper radiator tank, two blown transmission mounts and a ruptured CV boot. The family has been apprised of the situation, and the decision has been made to continue life support, until all injuries can be successfully addressed.

                            She will live to see another 100,000 miles!!!!

                            pics will be posted next week.
