you CAN dress a head gasket? guy at my local auto parts told me the head was supposed to be able to float slightly(thus the short thread portion on the bolts) and that i shouldn't seal it with anything...

I think we have different definitions of 'dress'. 'Dressing' the gasket surface means to lightly polish it, to obtain the correct surface finish of 20-30RA.

I believe you are referring to the old terminology of applying a rigid sealer to a gasket, such as Indian Head shellack. If that is the case, your parts guy is correct.

I've heard of heads warping to the point of binding the cam before... but I haven't seen one yet myself!

Apparently they can "correct" it by heating and pressing the head flat again. Have you had much success with that kind of an operation?

dude, I've seen heads so warped they BREAK the cam!!!

I haven't done hot press deal myself, as I don't have the appropriate oven or press. Also, most of the successful operations I've read about are on iron heads.

got the valve job done, and the head reassembled. An arthritis flair made me cut my workday short today

                  bare head before soda blasting

                  valves before grinding

                  after blasting

                  freshly ground valves

I had to clean the runners up a little

                  getting the seats cut

                  checking seat-to-face contact

                  reassembly started

                  more next week...

Sorry this is taking so long, John!

no, just gray painted mild steel. Just one of the teardown benches at the school I work at.

                              And thanks for the compliment!!
