  • Kia Rio and what we know.

Thanks to shadetree I am now interested in parts information about the 00-02 Rio. We now know that the Rio uses a G-series Transmission and from the research I have found they mostly use the cable style clutch setup. I have yet to see one that uses a hydro setup. If there is please elaborate. It also uses a 2 piece CV axle setup that cures the problem of trying to find the rare half shaft for those wanting to use the G-series tranny. Anyways, we also know that the top strut mount for the front is also a upgrade because it uses a bearing pivot point which allows for easier steering. I haven't found to much about the suspension. Would like to have those that know more about the KIA RIO to add some more information if they will. I have one at the local yard that I am looking into getting so we can find more out about parts that can be used as a upgrade for a festiva.

rio struts and springs. 00, 01 and 02 series. Fit on the front of festy's and spires. rear struts will not fit. Springs will however.

That's information pulled from one of our members with a confirmed fit.

Other parts from certain vehicles will fit as well. I can list elsewhere... Mostly panel parts.

Here are some performance specs I found online. Not sure if its anything interesting:

          -
1,793 cc 1.8 liters 4 in-line engine with 81 mm bore, 87 mm stroke, 9.5 compression ratio, double overhead cam and four valves per cylinder
          -
          Unleaded fuel
          -
Fuel economy EPA highway (l/100km): 8.1
          -
          Multi-point injection fuel system
          -
Main 50 liter unleaded fuel tank
          -
          Power: SAE and 93 kW , 125 HP @ 6,000 rpm; 108 ft lb , 146 Nm @ 4,500 rpm

Im wondering if the rear trailing arm has any simularities to the festiva or aspire setup. If so its possible that we could have another suspension swap. I cant get any measurements or comparisons until possibly tomorrow.

I assume so because if im not mistaken the body style changed.

EDIT- acutally from some research I have found they carried the same 2 body styles through 04 according to google. If so then i wonder why there would be a diffrence? The only thing I can understand about the 03-04 is the different 1.6l engine being used instead of the 1.8.

Does anyone know if these specs are close to our BP specs?:

1,793 cc 1.8 liters 4 in-line engine with 81 mm bore, 87 mm stroke, 9.5 compression ratio, double overhead cam and four valves per cylinder

The rio uses a "replica" of the b6 motor.

04 struts are compatible, however the upper mounts are not.

Didn't i read in one of your or saftyguy's posts that you can use the tops of the 00-02 struts on the 03 and up struts, also i could use some clarification with these struts, can i simply install them on my car, do not cut the springs, get the car aligned and not have to worry about axle problems.

the kia engines although similar are different, i matched headgaskets at work to a BP and although they share a design ancestry they differ enough to not have interchange.

I am however curious as to the half-shafts. the Rio much like the escort is a wider vehicle and utilizes a 1.8L like the escort. We cant use escort halfshafts because they are too long.

Logic would lead to the Rio also being too long? Perhaps the 1.6L Rio is an option for the shaft? Has someone tried it successfully?

It just seems to easy a solution considering how common and available those things are.

Im wondering why in the hell kia would slap a G-series tranny on a 1.5 litre engine? lmao thats over kill! Im reading on some of the rio forums right now and they use our BP for engine swaps. crazy huh?

Because it was available. I don't think its overkill. They used g-series with 120 hp on the escorts. First gen Rio's had around 110.

1.5's are only 96hp but I understand what your saying.
