MPG Cam Results

    Sounds like it would be good in an auto car with brad behind the wheel. I tried shifting under 2k the last 2 tanks and it just doesn't work for me, lasts about one trip to work and the way home it's game on.

        Well then clearly an mpg cam is not for you...lol

            So my stock hydro cam is back in with the same mech rockers as I was using on the MPG cam. This is not so simple as I thought. This combo feels better at every RPM from bottom top. I guess my impression of the MPG cam came from going to mech rockers on it from the Aspire roller hydros on the stocker. So I just don't know what is up with it.

            Anyway, the next couple fillups will tell all. About 200 miles to go on this tank. Then I have an Aspire cam to use with the mech rockers to compare. Can't wait. So far the only definite thing I can say is that I love the old style rockers.

                So, cold weather was back this time, and still same station and same pump.

                Just to make sure this is clear - same weather conditions as the MPG cam tested in at its lower number(40mpg), around the same distance test, and the same winter gas from the same station and same pump. Even the same rockers this time. Only change at all was the stock cam put back in.

                And it's right at the exact same mileage I got with the 2nd run of the MPG cam, which was in strangely warmer weather. 41mpg over 339 miles.

                So I will make a FS thread for the cam today or tomorrow. Am I saying it doesn't work at all? No. Maybe my driving style is no good for it. Maybe it works better when it's warmer. Maybe, maybe, maybe. IDK. All I'm saying is it's not working for me and "so far" 2 other customers in a total of 3 different setups. Draw your own conclusions. Matt makes good stuff, so I'm just not sure what to think yet. Does he grind these himself or send them out for the whole job? Maybe somebody messed up after the first cam that he tested. Who knows?

                Anyway, back to my tinkering. Gonna run one more tank through as-is and then it's time for some weirdness to be a happenin'.

                  Wow.. Are you able to confirm if this cam is truly custom and not just a cleaned up stock cam? Did you try calling dick meyer to share your results?

                    I have not personally let Matt know, and I think Tom is still working with his, but judging by these results I don't imagine he's going to get anywhere "legitimately".

                    I'm sure it's custom. It definitely behaves differently than the stock cam. I just can't see how the first customer reported huge gains, which Matt designed the cam for, and now everybody is getting jack unless something went wrong somewhere.

                    With Matt pretty much given up on the Festiva crowd (and no hard feelings there for sure) I don't know how much he could even do now that he has real jobs lined up, but I'll let him know and see what he says.

                        That doesn't explain Tom's results so far.

                        I have emailed Matt to see what he thinks. Not accusing him of anything. Nothing like that. Just letting him know our results so far and asking his thoughts.

                          I would imagine it would benefit someone like me more, my drive to work is pretty much 2 miles in town, 5-6 at 70, and 30 miles at 55. Tall tires and aero mods would help too.

                          I also don't deal with any elevation or curvy roads.

                            Got a response from Matt. Pretty much what I expected, and that's OK with me.

The other 3 cams that I produced, unfortunately, cannot be an "apples to apples" comparison as the roller cam that I produced, the customer made it clear that he would not be happy if he lost performance. The cam was designed to not effect the overall loss of power. This most certainly made the MPG gain not as great. Also, the customered performed a couple performance enhancements at the same time. In his report back to the members, he also conveniently left out the fact that his MPG runs were done with the cam installed 1 tooth off. This most certainly had a negative effect on the mpg. The other customer, who has complained that he has lost fuel economy, has conveniently left out the fact that his cam was installed on a freshly rebuilt B6 using a Weber carb that he doesn't have the ability to adjust & is running AFR's in the 11's ( way rich ) so of course his MPG went down. The other issuse is that the MPG cam, tho sacrificing a little on the topend, has seemed to broaden the low & mid range torque curve, which I believe has made the car a little funner to drive & thus causes you to be in the throttle a little more. You also need to remember that cars get worse fuel economy when it is cold. At this time, the only variable is the installer & the state of tune of the engine. Normally I would spend more time looking into this, but unfortunately, I am no longer producing parts for the Festiva. So any further R&D will not occur. Cam shaft will work as intended if vehicle is operated as intended.

                              I think he is talking about be with the B6. It is not freshly rebuilt, I merely replaced my old cam with his "max MPG cam" I didn't adjust anything else. My fuel economy went from 34 to 29. My idle AFR was 12.5, cruising was 15. Later, after I removed his cam and installed another from a '90, I adjusted my idle AFR to 14. I'm getting about 35 now. I wonder if the owner of the first cam he made did lie to him just to mess with him. It would be pretty funny if you think about it. Maybe the guy didn't like Matt much! Oh well, we bought snake oil!

                                sorry but I c people that wasted money on parts that were supposed to work and before they all got lined out someone conveniently got out of the festy business oh well.by the way if u matt dick could have made a lot more money doing other jobs and chose festy jobs and made less money well that was ur decision and stop cryin over it ur a grown man for christ sake

                                for all u that bought this cam sorry u got screwed maybe u can make shift knobs and get money back lol
