4 speed vs 5 speed

looked thru the trans specs in an 88/89 shop manual and a 1990. both list identical ratios all gears and final @ 3.777. you probably know the aspire has identical ratios as the festiva but a higher final @ 4.06 to make up for bloat.

So based on this, does that mean that the aspire 5 speed is more or less desirable for drive-ability? MPG? when mated with a B3?

MPG will be less with the Aspire 5 speed. I put a Festiva 5 speed in one of my Aspires and gained on average at least 5 MPG on the highway.I have gotten close to 50 MPG on more than one occasion with all highway driving. That was running 70 MPH or more at times.

You don't. They are exactly the same on the outside to my knowledge.

However if you have the trans on a bench it is easy.

Grab the shift shaft, rotate it as far as it will go clockwise, and pull out on it hard. If it clicks into place and holds it's a 5 speed. If it doesn't it's a 4 speed or it's broken somehow.

Or ya know, just try to shift it into 5th with the shifter. lol
