Thanks.. Here is a link to some pictures of Rosie when I was trying to help Sam sell her.

Eventually I hope to get a new hood, fix the wavy dents in the doors and get her a red overall paint job so everything matches her original color.

I finished polishing and waxing the front bumper and grille today...to completer her polish and wax job.

And now I have over 500 pictures in the Rosie Project Library:

Thanks... It's a labor of love.

I added 14 more pictures to the photobucket link showing the Junk Yard automatic transmission that was delivered today.
I know I said I was considering switching to 5 speed but I just wanted to get her to the point where I call this project complete.
They only guarantee the transmission for 90 days so I'm going to get it installed this weekend I hope. I also have all the AC components ready to go back in and I will install that when I confirm that the transmission is good. When I finish that I will call this project complete..and then probably start a smaller one.
Today I put new wheel bearings in the left rear of Trixie. She still had the bearing that were on the Aspire axle when I did the swap.
        The soaring is quite now.

        • I bought a used automatic transmission from a junk yard in Sumter, SC this past week for $182 delivered to my house.
It has a 90 day guarantee so I need to get it installed in Rosie soon.
I borrowed my neighbors cherry picker again so this time I will be removing the engine and transmission together to do the switch outside the engine bay
I found out that it's easier for me to do it that way with an automatic transmission.
Today I put a new fluid filter and fluid pan seal on it. Also put new torque converter seal and axle output seals on it.
Painted the oil pump and cooler tubes black.

This past week I let my 12 year old grandson drive it around the cemetery near my house for about 30 minutes.
He is going to help me with changing the transmission. It will be his first car when he gets his conditional license in about 2 years and 6 months.

          • With the help from my gransdon Harry, we got the JY transmission mounted and the engine dropped back in Rosie during the last two days.
Rosie will be Harry's first car when he is old enough to get his license in a couple of years.
He is coming back over tomorrow to help get everything else connected and we will see if this transmission works.

              • So this time things have not turned out so well... with the transmission that I got from the Junk Yard.
Got everything back together today and here's what happened.

                1. The starter would not engage with the shifter in Park, but it would start with it in neutral.
                2. It also will not lock the transmission with the shifter in Park.
                3. Started the engine and let it warm up a bit and shifted through the gears.
                4. Put it in reverse and backed out of the driveway ok.
                5. Put it in drive and it looked like it was going to work as it shifted on up to third and keep going for a thousand feet or so.
                6. Then all of a sudden it seemed like it was in neutral and would not continue.
I was at an intersection so i did a 190 and let it roll over to the side of the road in the direction of my driveway.
I tried shifting it through the gears but it would not engage in any gear. Then I turned off the engine, let it sit a minute
and started it back up. Then when I put in it drive it engaged and I drove it back and pulled in my driveway.
But then after I stopped and put it in neutral, I could not get it to engage in any gear again. I turned of the engine
waited a few minutes, started it back up and it would engage again.

Anyone every heard of anything like this?

First thing I'm going to do is switch the neutral safety switch from the old transmission to this one to see if that does any good.

                  • But just in case, double check the fluid level. Warmed up in park.

                    • Tough luck, you know it holds 6.6 quarts, did you check the fluid screen, it does sound like the fluid pump is messing up, check with a local trans shop. Good luck.

Ok.. I did put only 6 quarts in and the old fluid had been thoroughly drained from the transmission and the torque converter. Plus that external filter probably holds about 1/2 pint. I will add another .6 qt tomorrow and see if it makes a difference.

                        • Check the level for sure, but if its fine and you want to spend time diagnosing it drive it till it stopps moving and then with it idling pull the hose off that is the return from the cooler to the pan. Pull it off at the pan and see if there is any flow.

                          • Is that 15micron filter installed ?

I made my own reservoir for my log splitter, 90gal, using a 10micron, matter of hours after first use it caught enough floaties the bypass opened.

If you're that worried of dirty fluid.

                            Delete that inline
                            Try and test results.
If good, drive and buy another gearbox filter
Go home and change. Then install inline, then test again.

But I think something is gone goofy in the valve body, and it hangs open/shut as the pump is keeping pressure. Only resets once engine is off.

Torque converters have a set of dog ears that reach in and spin a pump. It's always being turned regardless of gear.

                            All guesses. Good luck.

                            • Thanks for the tips guys.
I did have the 15 mircron filter on.
I removed the filter and connected the cooler up directly. The pump seems to be working because the oil cooler was full when I took the hose off. I also added a little over 1/2 qt more fluid.
None of this made any difference.. and it continued to act the same as it was doing. Would engage at first after starting but then gradually would loose traction and stop..then could do nothing to get it going unless I turned the engine off.

I called the Junk Yard this morning and told them about it and they are going to deliver another transmission at no charge from an 89 that supposedly had only 82,000 on it. They said if that one doesn't work they will refund my money.
So I now have the fluids drained and except for removing the axles, it's ready to pull out.
When I drained the fluid there was gritty sand particles around the drain plug... so there is no doubt that
the valves have it in them too so there is no way it could have worked.
This transmission change thing is getting to be a piece of cake.

                              • Sand in transmission is not a good thing
Hope the 'new' one works out for you.
Its funny how much faster you get at that stuff after a few times eh? I remember the first time i changed an engine + clutch + timing/waterpump and seals in a 7th gen civic it took me 17 hours. By the third time that summer i did it i was down to 8 and didnt have to open a haynes manual. I think i even remembered the important torque specs by the last time. It was less enjoyable third time around but at least it was one day instead of 2
Are you pulling engine and trans out together or leaving the engine in this time?
