Burning alot of oil...

So when i got my 88 festiva a couple months back (Traded my snowboard for it) The guy said it needed a valve cover gasket and that it burnt some oil at the same time. I did the valve cover gasket the next day, and now it doesnt leak any oil. However, it burns a TON of oil. I am definitely thinking it is the piston rings but i was wondering if it could be something else possibly? Help me out guys

You know I little info on how much it smokes, when it smokes, does it smoke all the time, might help us help you.
How much is a "ton of oil"?
A quart in 100 miles, 500 miles, 1,500 miles?
What do the spark plugs look like?
Most likely rings.
As perucho said, a leak down test will tell you what you need to know.

Its either rings or valves seals. possibly head gasket.

It goes through a quart every 200 miles i'd say, checked the spark plugs last night and they didnt look bad at all, no major oil on them. My friend's festiva had a ton on his #1 piston spark plug and his doesnt burn any oil. I have 217,XXX miles on my festiva

Okay i googled it, that seems pretty simple. I will do a leak down test, i know its not a head gasket because i am not loosing any coolant

I'd say it needs rings. Slap them in and go don't touch the piston walls. I've done this many times it will last longer.

if you're going that far, you should replace the valve guide seals as well.

All support yes have the head machined if you have the money. I had eight guides replaced on my last b3 rebuild. Thanks festyboy point that missed helpfull info.

Might as well do rod and main bearings while you're in there and you'll have a brand new engine. Lol.
