I swapped in a low ratio rear diff and 5 speed tranny into an old Ford P/U which caused the speedo to read 20% low. Which was what I was expecting (ie the engine revs 20% lower at highway speeds) but was fortunate to be able to choose from a variety of different aftermarket speedo gears in order to rectify the problem.
Unfortunately that option is not available to Festys, even an Aspire speedo gear (from a manual tranny) is the same as for a Festy MTX and ATX. I suppose if speedo calibration was really important to you swapping over to an Aspire tranny or any tranny (MX3/323/Protege) that comes from a car without 21 inch diameter tires (ie 12" rims) would better suit a Festy speedo. Most Mazda stuff from the late 80s and early 90s had 175/70-13s which are 23" in diameter.

I might have found the answer... if so it will be about $100. Not ready to accept that as the only.

I tried the aspire gear. The shaft was too short and didn't reach

Down at the bottom of the page, $72 ratio adaptor; if you are running aspire tire size you want to speed up 11%.

I contacted them a while back. They said they don't have an adapter for our cars.

Hi I'm new to all this. I just got my first festiva,of course having speedometer psroblems. Gps sounds like the way to go for for now. Too bad, though now I know not to take it to a shop since they probably couldnt calibrate it either.

would it be feasible to hold the shaft that the speedo needle is attached to and re-position the needle by pushing it CW or CCW on the shaft the amount of MPH you are off? would it stay where you put it? i'm just guessing it's a pressed fit. and i guess if you have to turn it CCW you'd have to remove the resting pin. i'll try this on a junker cluster.

^ I did this to my old Rust bucket a while back . Just moved the needle to be correct at 55mph since that is most of my driving. Therefore above and below will be a little off but much less so. It worked for me. Like said above. the needle motion isn't linear so please take that into consideration. LOL

Kinda the same concept with the temp gauge too. Probably why sooo many temp guages are off compared to others. The needle "can" be installed a little off at the factory i'm sure. Sounds logical anyway. lol
