That's more of a gear ratio issue than weight most likely. Larger outer diameter tires will have an effect on TQ. That's what is so nice about the 165/45-15's. They are a tad smaller than 155-12's so acceleration and braking are are better without adding power or going with different brakes.
I have 4 stock festivas as well as my B6t car. My 89 carby has 200k on the original drivetrain and I daily drive it with 165/45-15 tires and adjustable coilovers. I'm running my O.Z. wheels, which are quite heavy, but the car is drastically better in every aspect than stock or my 155 13" tires. I have caught a 997 Porsche in this car on the race track with stock brakes and shocks. Lol. These tires are a phenomenal advantage in handling.Driving for me is neither a right nor a privilege. Another factor to consider as well is where the weight is in the wheel/tire combo. Wider and large diameter tires will have more weight placed further out on the circle this is going to affect TQ more than larger brake rotors, which add weight the center of the circle. Heavy tires are more of a disadvantage than heavy wheels and most tires are actually heavier than the wheels we mount them on. That is one of the very important reasons that performance orientated cars come with low profile tires. On the race track, tire weight is always a concern, but it often goes undiscussed in the street performance world.Last edited by Advancedynamix; 05-29-2013, 06:22 PM.Driving for me is neither a right nor a privilege. My 12s were 155/80 and I went to 165/60/14 with an 11.8lb wheel. The difference in size is almost nothing. I guess it would be the weight. At the same time I also added heavier rotors, so maybe it all added up to something. All I know is my fuel economy went down an average of 5mpg, and it does feel slower, but then it's a stock B3.Any difference that makes no difference is no difference.

This guy is probably running a similar setup with either spacers or a lower offset wheel.. (*edit: looks like a lower offset wheel.. maybe 15x8 +20) I'm diggin' it but, It would require flares. I don't really want to hack my fenders under the flares though..
Man.. I'm really torn on which route to go. I like the 13's, 14's and 15's... I have stock brakes right now so, I'd like to be able to run the wheel/tire combo on there now and then upgrade to big brakes later and keep the same setup. So, I'd have to get a multi-pattern wheel (4x100 & 4x114.3) or go with a wheel no smaller than 14" so I can fit capri 4x114.3 brakes in the future.. hmm
Is there a big brake in 4x114.3 that I can fit behind a 13" wheel?Last edited by Die-Laughing; 05-29-2013, 07:59 PM.

If you go the dual-pattern route, Discounttire is showing a 13" wheel as stock for an 01 Rio.
As a side note, I weighed everything and added it up before I swapped. From 155/80/12 and stock brakes to 165/60/14 and early (02 and under) Rio brakes with studs was about a 7.5lb difference overall. That's not counting the weight of the knuckles and calipers, of course. Just rotating weight.Any difference that makes no difference is no difference.

Are those rims good you think? 15x7 35mm offset
with 165/45/15 federal Formosa tires. You can see the slight stretch in the first picture. Those wheels are 38mm offset, but 35 fits even better (my rp02s are 35mm offset). Those pictures were taken with around 2.8 degrees negative camber on all 4 corners. I drove it like that, loaded with stuff, from San Diego to The outer banks of NC and back. No abnormal tire wear great mileage (for a b6t) and a nice comfy ride.Driving for me is neither a right nor a privilege. No, there was still another inch or more (depending on bumpstops) of drop. That was set up for a comfy ride across country.Driving for me is neither a right nor a privilege.
