  • I'm sorry if this is a dumb question but why did you swap out 5th gear? I've always heard that 3rd gear was the weak link on the g-series transmissions?
    Current cars:

1993 Ford Festiva 5-Speed - Festiclese III - Cousin of the Banhammer - "The Jalopnik Car"
    1984 Toyota Cressida - 2JZGE Swap, Turbocharged.
2013 Mazda Mazda2 - Exhaust and Wheels (the daily)
    2002 Toyota Tundra - V6/Auto/2WD - The Tow Vehicle.

    • I probly could but they need to be perfectly centered.

Longer 5th gear so it drops the rpms while cruising and higher top end. The gears aren't weak its the case. The case flexes and allows the gears to push each other apart and then they strip the teeth off.

      • Ahh, ok. Sorry I was thinking the 5th gear swap was for strength or something, totally makes more sense it was for gas mileage, lol. You started with a Capri transmission, right?

What transmission did you pull the 5th out of? (Out of which car)

          • Plethora. Reminds me of this anecdotal story about the Marine Icon, Chesty Puller.
During the retrograde maneuver from the Yalu River at Chosin Reservoir in Korea during that war, He is often quoted as having asked, "How many were the enemy" from an observer. After several attempts by Army officers at estimating the forces arrayed against his Marines, a Marine Gunny piped in, "Its a whole sh*t pot full." Puller's comment, "Well now I've got something to work with!"

Wouldn't happen to have the gear ratios from those do ya?

                    • It's not looking good. The ring gear bolts are approximately .036 too big. My cousin is off today so he tried to take it to the napa machine shop to drill out the ring gear. They told him they didn't have the right drill bits and told him to take it too another machine shop. So if they can't drill it out or lathe the bolts ill have to see if mfactory can make me new bolts.

edit.... He just called back the other shop said no problem it should be done this afternoon or tomorrow morning.

                          • Forgot my punches and torque wrench at work so I couldn't start on trans. Did get a lot of the wiring sorted. Also the ring gear holes are about 1mm bigger than the bolts now. :banghead: So Ill either put it back together as is and hope it doesn't break or spend money I don't have and get a kia trans.

                            • Do what i did and add a few welds to hold the ring gear to the diff. that way there's less worry of the ring gear twisting on the diff and shearing the bolts
