  • Project Tin_Can - b8 SOHC install

So if you read my other thread you already know that the b3 is dead and I'm forced to install the b8 3 weeks ahead of schedule. Meaning the majority of my prep work was not done yet. None the less I figured I would start the build thread. I will have pictures uploaded next week when I rerun to civilization - its too much of a pain to load them into photobucket and onto here from my phone.

    Day 0.5
Nabbed the injector harnesses off the b3 and the b8. Started pulling parts out of storage.

    Day 1
Only got to work on it for six hours today but none the less it was quite productive and I'm satisfied with the progress
    Accomplished:
    Injector harness rewired
    Nessicary B3 components pulled
All harnesses and hoses disconnected (aside from the fuel lines that will happen right before the pull)
Festiva motor and trans prepped and ready to be pulled
Aspire motor and trans prepped and ready to be pulled

    Still to do:
Cut stripped exhaust and shift linkage bolts on the aspire
Remove fuel lines and pull both b3's from the Festiva and the aspire
Seperate the aspire trans from the b3 and prep for the b8
Install clutch and flywheel on the b8
Mount the aspire trans to the b8
    Clean engine bay
Move vaf wire to left side of engine bay
Relocate battery to the rear (includes finishing the custom batt box)
    Install b8
    Wire and plumb b8
Fill b8 with fluids and burp the cooling system
    Install new axles
    Testdrive

For those wondering why I'm pulling two b3's its because I will be doing the aspire trans swap at this time - if I have enough time left of my vacation then ill also pull an do the aspire brake swap and install the teins and new wheels

Sorry to hear that your B3 died, but in the long run, I think you'll be happier.

What are you doing for a clutch? I'm going to do the same thing (B8/Aspire trans).

You got a picture of where it needs ground? I know everyone's said you will see it once you get the clutch housing on but a picture would help give me an idea of how much battery I need on the dremel
And like I said I'm taking pictures I just don't have a way to upload them easily.

              Tunner,
You have anyone giving you a hand with this?
How much time do you have to finish this and be on the road?
If you want, email me your pics and I'll upload them to your account or can use mine if it will help.

Something tells me a simple dremel aint gonna cut it. Ive heard you can do it with a sawzall, though an angle grinder sounds good to me.

                  Day 2

I cur the two stripped bolts and got the aspire motor out . The Festiva motor didn't come as nicely . . . I couldn't get the axles to pop out so I wound up cutting the pass axle and pulled it out anyway. Kemp came down mid-afternoon and help clean the engine bay and begin preparing the b8.

                  Accomplished:
                  Both b3's pulled
                  Engine bay clean
                  Majority of b8 prep complete

                  Still to do:
Finish motor prep and wiring harness
Remove trans from aspire b3 and install on b8
                  Install b8
                  Grind tab and plumb

Mark and I had the same problem on my driver's side axle....turns out the circular clip was stretched out a bit and was causing the problem. Here's a quote from jglutz about the same issue
"ALSO...FOR EVERYONE...when the axle is pulled out of the tranny....you will notice a little circular clip in the spline that provides retention of the shaft after installed. If you ever remove this clip and re-install it...use extreme caution not to over strech it. If it has been over streched and then re-installed...it will over expand inside the tranny and might not recompress again if the axle needs to be removed."
                            Guess we got lucky Mark!!

Hehehehe...I think the sound of it popping out of the transmission woke my neighbors up. We'll definitely be replacing that clip with one from a junk axle. Over-expanded is an understatement...I've never had to fight with a CV that much.

Luckily we had your big dawg crab arms and 2 large pry bars
