  • RWD Probe LS Power!

Hey guys, I don't post too much here, but I keep tabs on things, cause honestly, my next project car will be a Festy!!! But for now here is a little backround on my cars.

My first "fast" car- 93 Probe gt. Started off stock, running 15.20's the first time out at the track, for me and the car... Quickly turned into a high 14's car with bolt ons, then 14.20's@96mph with a Jspec KLZE motor, and drag radials. Got bored with that, as we all do, so I decided to supercharge it. Without megasquirt, it ran low 13's, with MS and a couple more #'s of boost it went 12.58@112 with a 1.894 60' on drag radials. Once again, got bored, decided to switch to turbo, ended up running low 12's at 118mph, but soon again, got bored and tried for something no one else had tried before. I twincharged my car(Threw the supercharger back on being fed by the turbo). This was a complete and utter BLAST to drive! Hitting 123.7mph in the quarter on drags, spinning through third gear, at the track! On slicks, it went 11.992@115mph on just 10lbs of boost, and when I turned the wick up to 14lbs, it went 11.94@111mph, due to the clutch slipping real bad from the 1000' on..... Had it held, it was a low 11's car for sure.

Well, then fate happened. Matt, a guy from wisconsin, was selling his RWD Probe chassis for $1500!!! Seemed like no one wanted it, which I couldn't believe, but was very happy to pick it up for that price!

So, Here I am with a RWD chassis and nothing to put in it. My original plan was to convert the Probe 2.5L to RWD status, but after seeing what a buddies 3rd gen camaro ran with just a cammed chevy 5.3L, I decided V8 power was the way to go. I picked up a 4.8L LS truck motor for $200 bucks! And the build was on!!!

Soon after, I had the motor mounts fabbed, got a fuel cell, a built 700r4 tranny for cheap, with reverse manual valve body, shifter and driveshaft for $800! And I started to put everything together, fabbing up a tranny mount, using whatever parts I had to for the motor to fit. All the welding was done by my friend with the third gen, Tyler.

As it sits right now, the car runs and drives, only has a 3.23 gear, so it's not that fast, but my 3.70 gear should be here tomorrow. The car is having cooling issues, but I am working on that.

At the track it went 14.40@94mph, with a best of 96mph, thanks to that crappy 3.23 gear and no ability to launch the car( no rear brakes were on at that time).

So, I'll end with what your waiting for, some pics....

    machining the oil pan

    Painted motor

The rear that came with the car, ford 9"

Fitting with tranny in the car

    Empty engine bay

The mess of wiring I started with

    Machining LS LED tails!

Fabbing exhaust. HMMM, why would it be up front?

    Slanted radiator for the win!!!

With front bumper held in place

    and some startup vids....

It does have full N/A exhaust now, and a hood on, so it's all good on the street, and it's titled!! Making it the only RWD probe on the streets!

    Enjoy!

and just wait til I get my hands on a clean Festy!!!

Thanks guys, It will be progress in motion, because currently I am getting a tree removed from the yard, reroofing, removing chimneys, and redoing one bedroom and the kitchen! Time for the project is at a premium, but hopefully by late this year I can have it turbo'ed!

Very nice bro. I had a 93 probe GT blacked out with 17's and that car would run for being stock. I never done anything else to the car but I had a blast driving it just for what it was.

I always tried arguing against this statement, but it's true! So much power can be made from the LS series motor it's nuts! I plan to see north of 600whp on 15psi, and that's going through an auto, 3.5" steel driveshaft, and a ford 9" all robbing me of power!

Thanks! The plan is a complete swap, Not sure which direction I am going yet, but it will be Honda powered, I want D series with a vitara piston eagle rod build, and it will be AWD.... I plan to see at least 300awhp, and plan to run coilovers, so I can run low at the track, and high in the snowy season with snow tires!!!!

I did'nt want to talk about it til it was in the works though, cause I don't want people to think its a pipe dream.

I waited until I already had the motor mounts made and the motor mounted before I told ProbeTalk about the RWD Probe......

Nice job on the swap! Looks like that chassis was built pretty nice with the 9"......full frame or just sub frames? Any idea what it weighs? I'm guessing around 3000-3200Lbs?

Weight should be right around 2700lbs. it was 2650 with an iron block 2JZ and TH400, so the LS shouldn't have added that much on top, hoping it's right around 2750, which it should be.

I am not sure how far forward he went with the 4X2 channel, could be all the way up to the subframe, which was altered mostly with tubing instead of crossmembers
