Torque steer happens because of leverage (probably not the right term). You're spinning something that's on an angle, and the longer side is on less of an angle, but has a longer "arm" twisting it, so there's more force trying to make it walk anywhere but straight. Make sense?

If both of your axles were completely straight at all times, I'm pretty sure it wouldn't be an issue... however, you'd still get wheel spin on the shorter axle, because the longer would absorb slightly more torque over it's length. And with completely straight CV's, you'd have lots of vibration, too.

Yeah, but I bet that they made the axles off the same shaft stock for cost reasons.

It's deflection, too... a shorter shaft will deflect less than a longer one with torque applied. The deflection causes the joint to 'push', which in effect forces the car one direction or the other depending on rotation.

I was trying to think of that word, and the only thing I could think of was the socket and extension analogy. You can apply more direct force to a fastener (less chance of rounding it) using a shorter extension. The actual term escaped me. Thanks for that.

              I've been posting pictures!

Currently I am still having to deal with the collection portion. I was planning to get the trans done last weekend, but ended up getting a 1.6L Miata flywheel instead of a 1.8L Miata flywheel Luckily, we caught it before we started any tear down.

The trans swap should take a day (trans in/out, main seal, clutch, flywheel, fabbing mounts & linkage extension), I'll make sure it's pretty well sorted out (i.e. beating the tar out of it) and then we start fabbing the manifold. Oddly, the trans is going to be the most irritatimg part, I've got to have close to $600 in the G25MR swap at this point.

Right front hub is making bearing noises. Bit the bullet and scored spindles/hubs/calipers from a 2001 Kia Rio. I paid $100... The pads and rotors look brand new, so I lucked out.

What part of the front knuckle is a spindle? There's a knuckle and hub..bearings go on the hub, the spindles are on the rear, axels act as a spindle for the front? What am I missing here?

It's not flawed... I've been working on cars for a long time. 'Spindle' is kind of generic and implies fronts.

I did the Kia Rio swap on the Festiva yesterday, overall it was stupidly simple and looks to be a great upgrade.

A comparison of the rotors... the Kia has a solid 1/2" on the Aspire. Interestingly, the Kia Rio uses the SAME calipers as an Aspire.

It assembled with ease, it's pretty much like a drop-in swap for Aspire suspension. The only down side is I stripped the threads out of the nut on my passenger side ball joint bolt.

After completion, I thoroughly recommend that you enjoy a quality smoke and quality beer. Relish in your awesomeness.

Been some delays and a total change in the build. Namely, this crap:

Running over a hunk of concrete with rebar in it can do some wicked damage. I am attempting to get a new Festiva currently to replace the black one. There's no body damage, but the chassis took the brunt of it all and it bent the lower core support, driver LCA attachment point and bent the unibody where the crossmember bolts in. My math says $200-300 in getting everything to line up decently (I.e. not perfect but useable) and get re-started... Or scrap the black car and transplant. I'm going with Option #2.
