I am at the point of turning the key on this. I bolt on the 323 exhaust downpipe...and it is hitting the axleshaft!

The knuckle is not all the way up, where it would be be at ride height, but the pipe will still hit the axle on corners or uneven surfaces. It was hitting, so I jacked the knuckle up some to get it to bolt on, but when I tightened the bolts, it hit the axle again.

Looks like I will have to "massage" the downpipe some, to get more clearance. 1/8-1/4 inch more clearance should do it.

I needed a 30 mm socket too. The new axle nuts are bigger than the old ones. I used a 1 1/8 socket on the old ones, but it didnt fit the new ones. I only had a 1 1/8 socket and 1 1/4 socket. Store didnt have a 30mm, but a 1 3/16 socket fit quite nicely.

Wow Doc, I can't understand the downpipe hitting the axle. I just looked at mine and it goes under the axle with an inch and a half to spare. I wonder what's different. I have the original exhaust manifold from the '89 323 that the engine came from and the '89 Maxda 323 downpipe that I ordered from Rockauto. It bolts right up to the cat like it came from the factory that way. From your pictures I think we have the exact same manifold so it must be the downpipe. Sorry you are having troubles. Wish I could look at it in person. Sux to be so close and yet so far!

Before,
and this was with the knuckle jacked up a little, When I let off the jack, to use it to help "massage" the pipe, the axle pushed the pipe down about 1/8. lol



Now



...and how I did it

I first put the jack under the pipe where the straight section starts to bend, for support, so as not to put stress on the weld on the exhaust manifold side of the pipe, and the manifold itself as well.




Then I stuck a piece of fence railing in the cat end of the pipe



Then I crawled up under there and pulled down on the fence railing pipe



and presto!
About 5/16 clearance with the knuckle all the way down

I dont know why mine hit the axle. Maybe it was made on a monday morning, after a good, "I cant remember what I did", weekend!

Yea, I dont have an idle up solenoid on my Weber. It didnt come with one.
Prolly add one at a later date.
