  • Have you discussed the lack of power with Matt? I'm just curious as to his response since he declared the first dyno pull was performed wrong and it was higher than the last one.

    • Hmm maybe I need to loose some weight, sounds like you had a fun trip I look forward to seeing some pic's from you and Greg.

      • My little b6 was crappy in third up till around 50+. From 55-80/85ish it was great tho haha.. 4th and fifth sucked but it was enough to smoke nissans and hondas to around 100, i never go much past 95mph. Not worth a wreck at that speed.

          Greg took a few pics of Matthew with his phone, after he washed it. It's dirty again because of the snowstorm I went through on the way home. I'll take a shot of the engine bay tmw. He even painted the VAF!

            No, I haven't spoken to him in a while. Should give him a call. I'm debating whether to stick a B6D head on Larry, after Matt does to it what he did to this B3 head. Or have him just do the B6 head that's on Larry now, along with a header.

            The B3 is making about 60% more WHP @ 85. If that same percentage can be done to a B6 head, it would make 112 WHP (I'm subtracting 15% of the claimed 82 crank hp, then adding 60% to get projected WHP). For a B6D making a claimed 100 crank, this would come to 136 WHP. That's assuming the same compression as when that head was in a Capri or whatever. If 115 crank, then 156 WHP.

            And that's before any turboing is done. Nine lbs of boost would give about a 58% improvement, based on my experience with Larry (70 crank became 111 WHP at the dyno, also a Dynojet):
            B3 = 134 WHP
            B6 = 177
            B6D = 215 (based on 136 WHP, NA)

            Question: does the NA B6D use the same ECU, injectors, MAF and disty as the B6?

            BTW I just calculated that a stock B3, @ 54 WHP will make 85 WHP @ 9 lbs boost--the same as Matthew's B3 without boost.

            • Should be close but @ wheel h.p. on toms b3 is the same as a b6 @ motor so i would have to go with the high revving b3 over the b6. jmo

                I thought you subtracted when going from crank to wheel hp. (wheel horsepower being lower than crank hp due to drive line losses).

                Are you sure you're not doing this backward?

                  Plus there's that whole gas mileage thing too! Turboing it would give me a 134 WHP car that got 48 MPG off-boost (yeah, like that would ever happen! :-) ).

                    I did it just like you just described. I think you are reading me wrong. I did get 136 WHP.

                      • I think you're playing with numbers a bit too much. Different displacements & head designs (sohc vs dohc) are going to respond differently to portwork and boost. The relationship & gains will not be consistent between the different engines.

                        • For quick reference (all numbers are in WHP):
                          ...........stock........headwork*.........+ 9 lbs turbo
                          B3.......54............85......................134
                          B6.......70............112....................177
                          B6D.....85............136....................215

                          * This is including intake flow work, and exhaust header. Results will vary with less $$ spent.

                            Oh I'm sure that's true; these numbers are certainly not in stone, just an idea of what can happen. I know from experience that Matthew's B3 jump from 54 to 85 is true, and the jump from 70 to 111 (no headwork, rear turbo) in Larry is true too, since those are both dynoed numbers. Matt did tell me that the B6 responds to porting/big valves even better than the B3, because it's fundamentally better-designed to begin with.
