  • Are you going to reinforce the lower support any? It's really flimsy stock and is where all the TQ goes to push the car around.

          • I haven't see these pictures of the support with the reinforcement on the front of the support as well. Care to explain?

            • I got some decent square tube from my neighbor today for free. I will use it as well as some 3" x 3" 1/4" angle from lowes. The angle will be like 30$. I would have bought it today but i forgot my wallet. A 4' stick should be enough to span the front of the car! I think.

Got the g series off the old motor. Got the stock flywheel and backing plate off. Got the G series backing plate cleaned and on. Got the g series flywheel cleaned and on. Tomorrow i need to find the TQ spec on the bolts and get to work. Also tomorrow im gonna get some oven cleaner and clean the trans before i open it up to do the Stig swap i mean top gear i mean 5th gear swap!

Is a longer 5th gear going to cause more or less torque at the same speed at wot

                • I would think less. It's dropping rpm giving more top speed

                  • I guess it all depends on where the torque peaks at

You loose torque multiplication with a longer gear regardless of torque peak rpm.

                      • Get a 3x2 angle it's a bit harder to find but it's what everyone has used that I've seen. I got a 8 foot stick from my local welding shop for 20 bucks.

                        • I found some 2 x 2. Plus my neighbor gave me some nice square tube. I'll come up with something. I have the plate to and will make the base plate as the pictures show. The rest will be kinda different but the same basic concept

Just adds resistance to twisting. It also helps support the bumper cover like the factory support does. The last picture is of our LeMons car. I made that support from 1/8" wall and the front support piece actually goes all the way under the angle iron. It is 1/8" thick as well. That provides a total thickness of 1/4". The original support that I made fir Tweak was made from 1/4 thick angle.

                            • I stopped in at lowes to see if they had a better tool for cutting think steel then what i have now. I have been using a small 3" angle grinder. My compressor is by far big enough but the little grinder is just to small and doesnt have the power behind it. It was a cheapie unit.

So last night i picked up a new AC 4.5" angle grinder and found a new diamond tip metal blade. It was like 15$ itself. Im so glad i bought it. It cuts right throught the 1/4 steel i bought like nothing. Id say it cuts as fast or faster then a really nice blade on a good band saw.

So i laid out my plate to the picture in the Advancedynamix post from another thread. I had both plates cut out in minutes. It was easliy 20x faster then my old method. Tonight i hope to get time to get out in the garage and weld on the plates. That might have to wait till Saturday tho. Might meet up with another member to swap parts. He has some miata brake upgrades for me and i have a set of rims for him.

                              • So zero progress on Lucifer this weekend. The wife was away for the 1st time in years so we took the weekend to hang out. Ill get back on the car tomorrow tho. We went to the autocross today. It was a blast and has me in the mood to finish up my build and get it out there.

i hope to start welding on the car tomorrow. Ill try to get my 1/4 plate cut at work tomorrow if the shop guys get time. If not ill have to do it at home. Either way ill have it ready to weld tomorrow.
