  • Lucifer has sat for 2 weeks now due to a big project at work taking up my time. Now that that my part is about wrapped up i can get back on the car. Tomorrow ill bring my plate to work and cut it up at lunch time. I really dont want to spend 2 hours at home with my 4" grinder cutting metal plates. I can get both plates cut at work in minutes.

Tonight ill clean the garage up and get all my tools put back in their places and ready to go again. Im gonna push to have the stock harness back together this weekend. I didnt cut it up much so it should be rather easy. I just have to get a new solder gun tip.

If i get it together ill put up a nice video.

I love soldering. I write this as I sit at work soldering. I'm pro ;-)

        • I now have the front support plates welded on. I also welded in some angle iron on the inside on the frame to the back of the plates. When welding in the plates we welded the top and sides 1st. After the top and sides the plate still had some good flex in it. The bottom weld really locked the plate to the frame. Even with the bottom weld the plate still had some light flex in it. It took much more tp move it but you still could move it. We decided to weld in some angle iron behind the plate and to the frame. We were able to butt weld the angle iron to the plate. It was also welded straight to the frame. The angle iron in the back like that 100% stiffened up the plate. Now when you try to move the plate the entire car moves. Its solid as a rock now. I used 2 x 2 x 1/4 angle iron for my bar across the front. I then welded 2 7.5" section to the bar ends to box them in. Others cut nice reliefs in the metal and such. I will just drill big relief holes to get a socket down in them.

The 1/4" plate in the front seems way to thick. I think some thinner plate would work just as well.

I will mark the bar tonight to find out where i want to drill my holes. Then bring it to work tomorrow to drill.

William helped me with the welding. Please dont pick on his welds. He welded much better then i could have with how my welder was set up. I am 100% happy with how he did it. Could you pro welders do better sure but does it matter no so please give him the credit for driving 3 hours to help a friend out and leave the weld comments to yourself.

          • I think it looks great. The sheet metal looks thicker than what I was picturing in that area. I only have a crappy flux core wire welder, and I know how annoying those are to work with.

            Looks good.
Any difference that makes no difference is no difference.

The metal was thin in spots. One of the plates i cut was cut to small. It made the weld at the top of the plate miss the frame rail. The angle iron in the back makes up for it tho. So if you cut wrong at all its a pain to weld. We used a flux core welder and it did just fine! Im more then happy with it. Its amazing the amount of flex we took out of the area with this mod. I cant wait to drive it now.

              • We did make a couple holes but was easily able to refill them and weld over with no issues. William did a nice job. He dove 1.5 hours and brought his own welder. I owe him! It was good to hang out with another Festiva Fan like myself!

Tonight im tied up getting the brakes redone on my truck. Ill only have time to make the holes on the support bar! Later this week i hope to really get some work done on Lucifer.

                • I went ahead and bought a new turbo downpipe flange. Im going to remake the exhaust in 2.5" OD pipe. The adapter flange i bought makes the exhaust run way to close to the water hose. Plus i messed the exhaust up pretty bad with some junk welds. Parts should be in by the weekend. I might find time to get to it.

                  • Looks great. That Festiva sheet metal is not easy to weld, takes patience.
I'm sorry I didn't suggest this before Mike, but I drilled the holes in everything first so I could weld nuts on the back side of the plates. I then bolted it all together, finish trimmed it and welded it on, all bolted together. Maybe you can make some weld in inserts to go in your plates.

                          • I will just drill holes and use grade 8 hardware. I might get the bolts in place and snug them up then tack them in place. Either way itll work just fine. Plenty of room to get in there and do what i need.

                            • I will get some time to work on the car tonight. The new turbo flange is in. At lunch time today i think i will head to an exhaust shop and try to find some good pipe to work with. I went down to 2.5"

I think i might weld in a short glass pack just to take the edge off the exhaust. With it being a straight pipe and all anything will help.
