  • Looks like my brothers F150. It's named "goose" cuz the steering wheel kinda makes honking sounds when he make turns. It's been a solid, reliable truck for him and he's driven it all over the country.
Should make a good hauler for you.
I'm glad to see your still at despite setbacks that were out of your control. The side carb setup is going to look crazy cool!!

Thank you. I went thru a lot of options before deciding on the f-150 but I'm glad I did. I got it for a reasonable price too. My other option was a toyota but in this area they go for a arm and a leg.

The carb set is coming together pretty quickly. I just got my slip filters in today. I mounted them but I didn't get pictures. They are a little bit too close. So close that they're touching eachother. I can live with that though.

In other news, I'm waiting for a miata big nose crank to come in so I can rebuild my bottom end. This is the only way I could switch to the ribbed pulleys. I know it sounds like a lot of work just to use ribbed pulleys but that's what I want. I'm thinking about running the motor I have with the v pulleys until I get the spare bottom end rebuilt but I don't know yet. I'll take a good look at everything this weekend and decide. Autox practice starts in Feb and the first event is in Mar. I'd like to have it on the road by the first event but that's pushing it.

        • Are you sure there will be enough room between the air cleaners and the firewall with the engine torquing?
That was my main consideration when I decided on downdraft twins.
Make sure you have a good carb balancing tool to use on each of your venturis.
Once the air flow and gas are all the same at the high end, you will have no problem getting instant response when you floor it.

          • The clearance was one of the more difficult things I had to figure out. Static, I should have about half an inch of clearance. In the next few weeks I'm going to pull my motor and dry fit the motor with the carbs and filters. If i have to, I will make some modifications to the firewall but hopefully that won't be needed. As for the balancing tool, I haven't even made it that far yet. I do know that the carb tuning will be a PITA because I have to tune the car to perform at 0' and 5200' above sea level and they also have to be able to handle a g of lateral force which carbs don't like so much. I thought about adding a wideband for each cylinder but thats too much. Instead i will be tuning with a tool ajd running one wideband. Maybe two.

            • Did a little bit today. I got my spare bottom end torn apart and checked to make sure my new crank was a good fit. Theres some shims on the 3rd main bearing that I've never seen before. Pretty neat deal.

              • I guess they're thrust bearings.

After looking at the internals, it looks like there was a spun rod bearing. Good thing I'll be swapping all of those parts out.

                • Yeah, thrust bearings.

                  • Small update. I picked up an oem spoiler from a member on here this weekend and I'm pretty stoked about that. I'm also talking to a friend of mine about picking up a silver 88. Even though mine was painted and it looks a lot better, it was still abused pretty bad by previous owners. I priced a windshield at $250 installed by safelite but the silver one is only $500. If I look at it and it's in better cosmetic shape, I'll probably buy it, swap my suspension over and sell mine.

Other than that, I'm trying in my free time to find a machine shop to measure my crank and deck my cylinder head. Unfortunately there's none in my small town so I have to drive about an hour and a half. Once I do that though, it's full steam ahead on the swap. I'll also be dropping the valve cover off tomorrow for powdercoating.

                    • Another update. Yay!

I ordered all of my bottom end parts. Piston rings, rod bearings, big nose oil pump, timing belt, water pump and rear main seal. I'm going to try to pull the old motor out this Friday. That way I can get the flywheel sent off when I send off the head. Once the head is back, all that's left is assembling the motor, wiring in the fuel pump, re jetting the carbs and installing everything. The ETA is March 20th.

What rings did you buy? I haven't had any luck finding decent rings for these engines. The aftermarket rings have twice the end gap that they should have, and never seal correctly. This results in low compression and oil consumption. On my last 2 b6 engines (b6d, and B6t) I've reused the original rings with great success.

                          • Are the Capri rings different than miata ones? 1.6 miata pistons and rings are still available according to Jimellismazdaparts.com.

I'm seeing manual pistons in standard, .25, and .50 with ring sets in the same. No listings for auto pistons just rings in standard and .50 sizes.
