  • Real quick Google search shows that some spec miata guys were buying rings for .010 over then filing them down. I think it makes the rings have more tension on them though. I'm sure charlie will chime in and tell us why this is a bad idea lol.

    • I would suspect that it would put an odd twist to the ring, the inside diameter edge being pushed above or below the OD edge plane within the bore and causing excessive tention within the ring land.

You don't need to replace the bearings unless you've scratched them. Pedro still has the original Main bearings because they were well within spec. No need to toss good parts.

This seems to work well, except the ring quality isn't good on aftermarket rings, so that causes problems.
The OE rings have noticeably more tension than the few sets of aftermarket rings I've purchased (NPR, Hastings).

            • I'm going to ordering a set of factory rings soon should I get the oversized and file down or will standard size be fine?

I would think that, as long as your bore is within spec, standard size should be fine.

Oh yeah. I'm still taking down the block and I'm going to lightly hone with a ball hone to clear up the cross hatching

                    • What's wrong with the cross hatching? Be careful you dont take off too much material. .001 bigger hole (.0005) on each side will increase ring gap by .00314. I do admire your drive. Keep us posted! And my previous post should have read : now you should have peace of mind.

I wouldn't worry about the hone so much then just clean up the rings and bore well

                          • I'm looking at vacuum manifold options for my carb setup. I found a cheap manifold with 2 large ports and 6 small ports. 4 of the 6 small ports will go to each of the runners, 1 large will go to the brake booster and now I'm stuck on what to do with the dizzy. I know there's 2 ports on mine but I'm not sure if both go to the same place. I'll have to look at it later. I also need to figure out if I can use the other large port for a catch can off of the vc. maybe go from the vc to the catch can then it will be drawn into the runners from there. Either way, I need to start figuring this out soon.

                            • I dropped the head off today for clean and skim. I should have it and the VC back by Monday. I think I'll have the long block assembled by then. I still need to fit the distributor and rebuild the carbs. I also need to skim the flywheel from my old motor but I have to actually pull it first.

                              • I got my cylinder head back from the machinist today. Fresh skimmed and cleaned. All I need now is the crank key and my cometic head gasket. I also ordered myself a little part from ernst pride. I really wanted a front lip so I asked him for one of these.
