  • Cursed at it. Repeatedly.

Turns out that "light knock" that's been there since the engine was put in the car actually was a rod knocking. And it's obnoxiously obvious now.

Time to hurry up and get the red 5 speed on the road. :/

The only difference in the whole system would be the catch can and its just giving the oil vapors a space to condense and collect instead of going directly into the manifold.
I'll run a catch can on the PCV line. If I'm still getting oil in the intake I'll try capping off the valve cover line.
Should I leave the PCV in place and connect the catch can to the valve, then to the intake, basically just placing the can in line? Fairly simple question but just want to be sure.

The blue one is going to become the candidate for the VW swap if I can get it sorted.

          • Finally got back to work on the festiva project. Not mine lol and it's not actually even a festiva I was working on today, but I got the BP out of the EGT. It's the motor that is going in Keith's car. The trans is missing 3rd gear on it but we have a spare trans that came with the car to go back on the motor. It's a very strong runner with good compression, I got to drive the EGT around the neighborhood a bit before tearing into it. Starting tomorrow I'll be throwing in the unknown condition spare motor that came with the car along with the hydro g trans I picked up from Daniel_cogar. Hopefully the enigine will run and I can go ahead and get the escort out of the way and Keith's car pulled in to start the fun stuff . Pics will follow when it's not so dark outside

            • A/C day today. Swapped out the compressor on the aspire and pulled a good vacuum on it. Let it sit on the gauges for a bit to check for any big leaks. She's ready to recharge, now we wait for payday. Also did the same to the grand prix. I don't know what we'll do with working a/c!

Enjoy !! A/C, stereo, and a five speed were all I looked for when I bought my first festiva. Only have one festiva w/o air now.

                • Dropped the rear beam off the red '89 today, planning on Civic 2" lowering coils on the new shocks that came with it, as long as they're not too short. If they are, I'll use the stock Civic coils I have. (2G CRX coils).

While I have it apart, I might also check if Civic rear top hats will fit in the rear strut towers. Not that I want to add weight, but they should keep the struts from moving on the pivot top setup they have now.

Yeah leave the valve there, I would leave the belt line connected to the intake pipe, it does help relive pressure.
Im not driving a Festiva because I'm poor. I drive a Festiva because i want to!

                    • Thanks.
This will be a good way to monitor just how much oil is being sucked in the intake, too.
I don't have to top off the crankcase very often, but I know some oil is being consumed or leaked.

                      • Finished plumbing all of my air condintioning lines around my power steering pump. Had to take out my new Sanden and install a factory Nippondenso. Just have to charge her up. Does anyone still charge R-12 in Buffalo or Detroit?
I also applied the old red hockey stripe decal kit. It looks amazing on a green Festiva (direct complementary color).

                              • Got the Aspire rear end mounted up used the Festiva's brake lines.

Had to file out the driver's side rubber hose mount location to get the larger Festiva line to fit it, and I still won't be able to put the retainer clip back on, but the passenger side mount unbolts from the Festiva swingarm (beam) and bolts onto the Aspire unit without modification, making it possible to reuse the entire passenger side Festiva line.

Still need to replace both bleeder valves, but they're loose already, so that won't be a problem. I'll pick up a new pair tomorrow instead of reusing ones I have already (can't be cheap all the time, eh?)

I put 45mm lowering springs From my old Civic on the new stock rear (Gabriel) shocks, haven't put them in yet. Instead of using the stock lower retainer (looks like a top hat, but it's not), I'm gonna use a set of tops I have from a eBay coilover kit that are 6mm aluminum, and I glued rubber isolators to the top coil of the springs (the ones that are stock on the Festiva).

The way you see the springs in the picture, they're smaller on one end. I had to put them on "upside down" with the larger end on the strut plate, and then "force" them on. They're only a tad too small, but once they're on, they sit on nicely.

In the second picture, the thing on top of my work fuel (Mt. Dew) is the blue top hat from the old set of eBay coilovers I had.

The way everything is sitting in the pic is not right, it'll be stock lower shock retainer (or fender washer if I can find one), then lower bushing, then blue thingy.

I also found out that the Civic top hats (4G Civic/2G CRX) are too large to fit in the rear towers. They very well may fit in the fronts, though. For the rear, taking the "skirt" section off would let you mount them, and have two studs in the rear tower with which to mount a strut bar mount. I suspect the rear track is similar to that of a Civic, so maybe the eBay upper rear strut bar will work.

Later, if I really want them, I'll make new tower caps for the rear to bolt them to.
