Got back to it today. Adjusted timing. No luck. I am thoroughly fed up. I don't know what else to do. When it fires up and idles AND revs up it sounds perfect. I do mean perfect. We drove it around and a few times it made it into 3rd gear without bucking. It just acts like it's not getting gas. We are going to check fuel pressure next. The fuel pump is new.

You have any idea why/where it caught on fire?

I've got a Mazda 121 (the one that's the same as the Festive and Kia Pride) and I've got what seems to be a carb problem very similar to what you mention, but I get no click frum under the dash when this happens. Can anyone here give me a hint or two on solving it?

What happens is that at low throttle, say under 30% the car works perfectly, same at high throttle opening, say above 70%, but anywhere in between the car shudders and jolts as if it's either misfiring or there's so much spark advance that it's knocking (can't be sure about the knocking because the car is so noisy that I can barely hear the engine).

I can still drive the car by avoiding the troublesome spot, but it's quite a pain in city driving and even worse than that while passing through the medium-throttle range to go for full-throttle it feels as if the engine wants to tear itself out of its mountings.

On a final note I can smell petrol just after cornering hard - is that normal splashing of fuel from the carb bowl or is something badly wrong here?

Any of you have any idea what I can do here?

Sorry we don't. We are still baffled. Like I mentioned in an earlier post gas was smelled and then came a carb fire. Good luck. And welcome to the board!

There are separate ciruits in the ignition control module for idle and running.
I'd get it tested - free at some parts stores. They'll give you a printout.

No. It's still sitting. I do have a project in the works and this will probably be the festiva that gets swapped.

come on! this needs fixing! mine does the exact same thing. i always thought the click was the temp sensor turning the cooling fan on. i think i'm going to try the spark advance and see what happens. does anyone know how the vacuum advance works?

yes. if you do it, let me know about how the carb to FI swap goes. maybe a write up would be good? i've only seen one other person swap to FI. if i don't get this fixed, i may be buying a new one.... my dad wants mine to swap to an electric motor in it!
