Oops! Too late I discover when I read the rest of the thread.
I figured I needed a hemostat about 12 inches long. It appeared that Harbor Freight didn't have that and I was prepared to order one on eBay for about $10 with free shipping. While wandering around Harbor Freight on the 4th of July I happened to see something that looked exactly like what I needed. It was a hemostat but Harbor Freight was calling it a "12 Inch Locking Clamp".

Here is the item I used, but mine looked more like a surgical instrument, solid stainless steel, without the red handles. Finding out about hemostats was a major discovery for me. I can't imagine a more perfect tool for the problem I faced. Thanks, Onree. Glad you could join us.

John, your post #70 in which you explained your thought process and partial reliance on outside expertise was excellent!

It pretty much mirrors most of my own thoughts. Both my parents were teachers. I'm a teacher (of sorts). I've taught several different subjects (drivers's ed, self-defense, Army marksmanship, etc.). However, I have found that I have lost all respect for so-called "higher education" based upon my experiences of it first hand. Facts and reason almost always lose to politics and power. Only with enough power can you get your facts heard fairly, if at all.

I think I could make a good argument that our forum here has more raw "academic integrity" than what I've seen at THE Ohio State University. Here, as long as you can provide citations and a logical thought process, you will receive a fair hearing.

Not so at OSU, and perhaps, many other institutions with calcified bureaucracies.

BTW, I reserve the right to make fun of you and your methodical, analytic approach. Some time you need to just grab a BFH and have at it!! It can feel good, really!

This has been on of the most enjoyable threads I've followed on any forum. All the input and analysis would make Kaoru Ishikawa proud. The focus on the spine was never broken and the many ribs contributed to a sound resolution.

Although I do admire those who achieve success with the bailing wire and duct tape approach, and on occasion, the BFH.

It's really not that difficult, Tom.

                Now repeat after me.
"I"...."I" Good. Now that wasn't so bad, was it?
                "tgubj"...."tgebj"
Not quite. "tgubj"...."tgebj" Right. Now your getting it.
Here's an easy one, "my"...."my" Of course.
Another easy one: "battert" "Sort of like battery, but with a "t" instead of a "y" at the end. You've got it.
"nrrfd"...."nrfd" NO! Can't you see there are two r's? Try again. "nrrrfd" Tom, you're putting me on, right? "Well, maybe a little."
OK. Moving on. "cgargubg"...."cagargubgi" No. Not quite. Let's break it down into syllables.
                "cgar"...."cgar" Right.
"gubg"...."gubg" By God, I think you've got it. Now all together.
"I tgubj my battert nrrfd cgargubg."...."I tgubj my battert nrrfd cgargubg."
Now backwards. "cgargubg nrrfd battert my tgubj I."...."cgargubg nrrfd battert my tgubj I." Yes. Yes. You have got it.
Now do this little dance step as you sing it to the melody of the "Star Spangled Banner." "Forward or backwards?" No. Forward.
"I tgubj my battert nrrfd cgargubg."
I think I've heard enough, Tom. You've got the part. Rehearsals begin next Monday at 10 AM. Wear sweats and comfortable shoes.

                Ok, Tony. Who's next.

Thanks for the kind words, Karl. Why am I not surprised to hear them coming from you?

Maybe, because your suggestions and your manner of presenting them have always found easy paths through the labyrinth of my mind.

Two small boats adrift in the middle of a large ocean. Just think. A few thousand more and we could lash all our small boats together and start a new country. Oh, wait. No roads? No Festivas? No Aspires? No deal.

Well, it was good while it lasted.

But seriously. I have decided that if small people like us are ever to have power and influence, it will come from the unique quality of our thoughts and the lives we build upon them. Each of us is a "universe of one". There has never in the history of the world been any other person exactly like you. And there will never ever be one in the future. For the vast majority of people this powerful observation has no meaning and, thus, no power. If you are lost in a world which is constantly fighting to gain control over your actions, you are become the ball in the pinball game called life. In that environment your unique, special talents, if developed and encouraged would just gum up the works. Maybe, even stop the flow of money from your pockets to those who designed and built the game for their own benefit. So, is there any hope for change?

Sure. You have lots of options. And, since we are all "universes of one", each and every one of us could (and I believe, should) develop his own unique option. I can only really speak of my own universe, and hope yours is enough like mine to have some meaning.

I believe there is one and only one important decision that a person must make. Either he will decided to constantly look for truth outside himself or he will find it within. If he does the former he is the ball in the midst of a furious game. If he choses the latter, he becomes both ball and observer standing above looking down on the folly of it all. From that perspective your thoughts will quickly become transformed and because these thoughts are more accurate that those of the ball, you will be able to alter your course through the game. Only slightly at first, as you experiment and feel your way like a blind man in a dark room.

Gradually, as the years pass, you will work out a life that begins to become noticed by the other balls. They see that somehow you manage to avoid the big powerful bumpers and have built for yourself and your family a pleasant, creative, and happy existence. And as they zip past you on the way to some mindless amusement, they shout out, "What's your secret?" Usually they're gone before you can even start to answer.

Eventually, you learn that if you hang out in some quiet corner of the game you'll have more time to answer when the question comes up. You tell them they are balls in a game, and that the only way out is to look for truth within themselves. You don't argue with them or try to win in some kind of existential debate. You simply say, "In answer to your question I can only give you my own personal belief. I could be wrong, but I believe this."

If, after hearing you, they choose to argue and dispute your answer, you calmly say, "You asked me what I believe and I have told you. I have no desire to convince you that I am right, and I will not listen while you try to convince me that I am wrong. I have done all that I can. If you want me to answer a question that will help you understand what I have said, I'll give it my best answer. But, after that, the thought is yours. It is completely up to you to make of it whatever you can."

And that's my answer of how small people like us can have power and influence. It's power not from might, but power from thought. It gives each ball only a little power, that which he exercises over his own life. But there are lots of balls, and when enough balls decide to roll through the game in the same direction, the power can be immense.

Finally, I would like to address your BFH suggestion. I guess I could take a BFH and have at it, if the car in question was yours. But even then only if you begged me to do it. Otherwise, I'd sooner take a BFH to myself than to abuse my poor ailing Aspire.

High praise, indeed, CharlieZ. I truly appreciate you kind comments.

I think the thread benefited from having as its subject a clearly observable but rather unusual problem posed by someone in a state of panic. There was no general, off-the-shelf answer that could be found. So the responders were more or less forced to come up with some pretty original suggestions. That to me was the most interesting part of what I think was a successful discussion. I will say that the breadth and depth of the responses kept me looking forward to what might come next.

I told you I was thinking about that lighted pick-up tool at Office Depot. Today I went online to see if I could find it on their web site. I found it here.

Notice the first line of their description:

"You won't have to hold a flashlight again while searching for lost bolts or tools with the General Tools Lighted Mechanical Pickup."

Zanzer, can you swear you're not working for General Tools?

Hint: I has to do with the placement of hands on the keyboard. Does that help? If not, I can give you another hint.

Is it out yet? I would get a case of cold beverages. Call 10 strong friends over for a beverage. Have them pick the car up, turn it over and shake it until it fell out. All have a second beverage, give a victory cheer and another beverage.
