If it's a carb snakepit, change to an Escort carb immediately and throw away all of those hoses the except the one for the distributor advance. You will not be frustrated as soon as you feel the instant response and extra power from having no computer controlled feedback carb.

          • ^^ Every time I see that picture, I consider getting in the car, driving all the way up to darn Canada, finding your barn, and running off with that setup. It's just too beautiful to not want.

            ...I'd suggest a larger padlock.

            • ALRIGHT. 6.5 HOURS OF WORK AND CLEANING LATER:

I needed something to keep me occupied, and I have literally never attempted to start the '93 parts car.. well, when I went out there I realized it was a complete mess from the PO (I've never had time to do anything with it but snag a few emergency parts). 2 complete 40-gal trash bags later, I had the interior down to mice-home-paper (which I'll sweep out tomorrow when I take out all the carpet).

Removed full interior. Front seats came out easy, all the side panels, dash 90% (stuck on one bolt sigh..).. then when I went to remove the passenger bolt for the back seat.. I felt a snap. Anyone guess what happened? The bolt welded to the body ON THE OTHER SIDE decided to break away. Spent 45min trying to get that off to no avail, including hammer and chisel whacking HARD. Gave up for the day on that..

Hand-cranked engine a tiny bit (last reg'd in 2007 haha...), checked oil.. put in battery from '90. Pulled fuel pump and set in a bowl of fuel.. crank.. crank.. It does turn over, I now know.. crank..

No start. Realize fuel pump isn't giving any fuel. Swap out pump I got at a junkyard a few months back (had to've been a running car, scrapped for seized bearing [sadness]).

              No start.

Got frustrated, threw an old strut 10 feet.

              Didn't feel better. Gave up.

Just thought about inertia switch as it was in an accident.

              I hate my life.

              Back to it tomorrow.

On the bright side, sounds like over the past couple years you have learned a lot about working on cars! I know that is the case for me, all because of the festiva.
Also, check the stupid stuff too, fuses, inertia switch, etc.

                • Haha I know!! Thanks, Charlie; it's been a serious learning curve. I barely knew how to change a tire 2 years ago (no kidding, I had changed one total.. and I jacked the car up using part of the floor and a bottle jack.. with no supports).

Between this great website and my Indiana buddies (who have to be annoyed with my questions by now >_>), I feel I could take on nearly anything moderately-routine on a Festiva.

Heck, now I want to put in a G-series in an apartment parking lot!

                  • Yeah, before I bought my Festiva last year, I only knew how to change oil, and tires.

The Festiva has taught me allot, and has made me do things I would have never thought I would ever do.

But anyway, I pulled the passenger seat, and pulled up the carpet and started cutting out the rusted metal on the floor, then ground it back to bare metal around the edges and primered it, after that dries I will break out the fiber glass, and patch up the hole, though since the hole is so big, I have to do it in two parts, I just want to get the bulk of it done today.

Once the floor is all patched up, I will probably have to look into finding a welder that will weld up the inside of the rocker panels.

If anyone nearby has a clean passenger side rocker panel that they are willing to cut out, pm me. Because I will have to cut out the rocker panel to get this fixed, because I don't know how deep it goes, and it already is pretty screwed.

Also my Silverstar Ultra bulbs came in the mail, got those put it. In the daylight I see zero difference, but I bet it makes all the difference at night. Also the still working plain old bulbs had a date of June of 2002 stamped on them, and they still work, talk about quality. Now I know the Ultras don't last more than a couple years if you are lucky, but if it makes a difference with the abysmal visibility of the Festiva headlights, then I don't care. lol

                    • I also changed passenger wheel cylinder and bled the brakes, using that water bottle 1/4 clear hose method, worked good.

                      • In the process of stripping my interior to clean the carpet, repaint panels and adding sound deadening to the car. So far I am 45 minutes into the process and only have about 10 more bolts before the carpet comes out.

Is the sound deadening material expensive, or is there a cheap material to use instead?

                          • There is always a cheaper alternative.
I chose dynamat and I got 72sq ft for $350.
It was the lowest price I could find online at the time.

I just now found the same kit for $251 here
Contains Nine 24 " x 48 " Flat Sheets Of Dynamat Xtreme For A Total Of 72 Sq. Ft/ For Complete Coverage On Rear Decks, Doors, Floors And Trunks

Shops wanted upwards of $1000+ for labor and material to do the work
So $350 to do it myself was a steal.

But I had enough to do two layers on the doors body around the rear seats and trunk and hatch.
And one solid layer on the trunk floor and floor beneath the rear seats.
And the firewall in the engine bay.

First car I've used it on and I've been super impressed always at what a huge improvement it makes in sound quality/noise+rattle reduction.

My last aspire with no sound deadening rattled.
And on the freeway was so noisy inside I could barely hear my music
Even with component speakers a sub and four channel amp.
But on this aspire its night and day difference.

I highly...highly recommend this to anyone chasing good sound quality.
It really is as impressive as everyone makes it out to be when used throughout the whole vehicle.
                            Running 40psi.....in my tires.

                            • In the last 3 days I've been getting ready for Madness! I installed my FMS springs on silver lightning (peewee), Fixed a sticky door lock, Couldn't unlock or lock it from the inside, changed struts on the back, Danged stuck bolt on the bottom of the struts. Rolled the fender lips on the back due to contact with the tires. More to come next week and I fixed the idle issue on my Dakota, I had to replace the IAC on it.
