I would very much like to think so, but I haven't seen any production annoncements regarding ethanol from cellulosic feedstocks.
Actually, in the last few years I've seen very little advancement on this front in terms of even annoucements that any milestones have been reached.

So who is going to release a commerical scale process in the near term?

    • ^^^ it does work, but since the output is less, then the research and money thrown at the projects are less to make any processes better. The pencil pushers note what returns the most and that really ties an arm behind your back as we all are seeing. Pencil pushers are why so many businesses in every industry leave certain states and ultimately the country. We need to start kidnapping scientists too.

The militia groups...the ones who want to be their own countries...if they sold all their weapons they could fund ethanol projects to be self sufficient, then sell their fuel to us (US) to buy their arms back. LOL makes no sense and perfect sense at the same time.

Actually, they would be lowering the bar, but that's OK. No one does the Lambada anymore.

Ethanol subsidies were ended already & you want to start them again. At least we know you aren't a repub or tea bag dunker.

        • The biggest dairy is east of Portland Oregon. They produce incredible amounts of

Methane. They supply all the power they need. They sell excess to Portland. Then
for the other 14 hours of 24 they light the gas and burn it. There is not a market for
green energy in the green state, Oregon. The greenies have the option to choose
green power on their power bill but even they are not doing it because it costs a
little bit more. They refuse to live what they preach. So, here in Oregon we burn the
gas, we shut down the wind and solar farms, because there is no market, even though
the choice to provide the market has been given to each person with a utility
          connection.
Greenies and environmentalists are all about money and power for themselves
          not what benefits the earth.
Those of us who do strive in this direction, please do not take offense, you are the
true environmentalists. The organizations absolutely disrespect mother nature and
people, they want more money and more power.

          • It really doesn't make sense that things like Ethanol (inedible corn crops) are being subsidized, but I have to pay more to choose energy that comes essentially free (less maintenance costs, which are far less than the cost of constant inspection and maintenance of internal combustion engine powered generators, etc).

There's no infrastructure, not a lack of market. Infrastructure is expensive, and there's not enough subsidy for REAL cheap energy, and too much subsidy for crap that doesn't work.

            Comment

            • The big business that controls the infrastructure also has a very effective voice in
congress and in state-local governments. These business interests are the enemy
but we are forced to dance with the enemy if good alternatives are to grow.

We are our own enemy, why do our wind farms sit idle so much but never the
cheaper hydro or coal plants unless for maintenance?

The market is not there yet. In the quantity needed to support big biz . We have
the infrastructure for this example, and that dampens my hopes for automotive
alternatives. Natural gas has every thing going for it. It is taxable ( government
support) , the infrastructure is in place for the majority of the country, cars are
made to run on it and conversion kits are available for gasoline and diesel engines.

The public everywhere in our country has rejected this much cheaper fuel. Cities
governments are the forced recipients of the cars produced..Nobody buys one!!!

The market has not been created. Why?? Greenies are the ones pushing these
things but they will not buy them!! When one does it is a rich hollywood actor
and its on TV!! We can purchase used city stuff at auction and we can get these
NG cars and trucks cheap with low miles again because there is no market.
When we go down to the fill place there is never a line or others there, very
few, just people like us are truly interested in this. The greenies have a bad name
in cities because of expensive projects they have forced on us. They have a bad
name in the country because they have caused more destruction and grief than
any other interest in our public lands. They are money, power hungry selfish
groups with no interest in real problems and real answers. They give people
like us with a passionate interest in alternative fuel sources a black eye, and
have destroyed the market end of things.

              • I've never seen a NG filling station. Ever.

I've run cars and trucks on propane, though. 2x100lb bottles (not legal) strapped to the frame of a pickup in place of fuel tanks, vaporizer and carb kit from a forklift, tuned by a forklift mechanic I used to work for. Ran great, got somewhere north of 15mpg hiway loaded with parts and tools.

                • In our town the NG office has a filling place.
Propane is another good example , fuel is still
cheap, widely available burns super clean has
114 octane and engines built for propane produce
                  plenty of power.

There is an outfit in Ottawa that generates alcohol from wood chips, straw and corn stalks etc. Iogen is the name of the company, and they've been at it for 15-20 years, but they've never been able to produce large quantities of the stuff even though their current operation is half the size of a city block.

                    • Exactly. Very few greenies or anyone who says they care practice what they preach. If everyone skateboarded biked or walked 15% of the miles they drive that's a loose 15% less fuel consumption. If you want to get super technical it's probably more, as a car or truck will burn more fuel on warmup to those close destinations you'd be biking or walking to. Anyway, a hit of 15% revenue to oil companies would make them do better with what they have, passing savings onto us yet again. The whole picture is to save with what you have to jumpstart more looking and more research elsewhere. However short of APPLE Microsoft, our goverment, the mob...who has money to fund this stuff? For almost every business out there in every industry, to get off the ground so often you have to get grants and help from the government, tax breaks, or cook your books yourself to stay out of the red. That solara solar company in such a mess is a perfect example. Alternate HC fuels are mostly unrelated, but people equate them to each other as being outside of the norm, and public and private support wont be there. It is frustrating to see media clips from "third world" countries who harness water power better, co-ops in small towns make sense and work correctly, all their public buildings and hotels are all LED lighting etc.

There are NG fill stations in my town, as a few taxis, some of the honda civics, postal vehicles use them. I don't know if id go out of my way to buy one of these, and certainly cant afford a new one. Again buying a festiva or anything that gets over 35mpg city is better than ideas that still arent off the ground or available in all areas.

Propane didn't ignite under compression. It actually requires an ignition source, afaik.

                            Update:

Go to pure-gas.org to find 5530+ stations in the U.S. & Canada selling 100% pure gas. One in thirty one stations now sell 100% pure(non-ethanol) gasoline. Whereas more stations than ever in the fairly station-dense southeast U.S. now sell 100% pure gasoline, along with fairly station-dense state of Wisconsin, Washington, Oregon, & Idaho states have fewer stations selling 100% gasoline. In my region 100% gasoline presently sells for 9-11+% more than 10% ethanol blend, which wipes out many people's extra mpg with 100% pure gasoline.

This rise in cost seems to be due to the extra ethanol compared to previous years, that is now being blended into U.S. gasoline stocks, in essence making less 100% pure gasoline available to the public.

                            • Christ, 30mpg out of a modded festiva is leaps and bounds from cars that start at 25-30mpg and go downhill fast with different gearing, upped displacement, big injectors that don't quite run optimum at low throttle etc. With all your skills you could have a 60mpg festiva.

As pure-gas.org states, now 5800+ stations sell 100% pure gasoline in the U.S. & Canada. Find one in your area. Your mpg will go up, your engine will be a bit quieter, smoother & will have a bit more low end torque to get you up hills without shifting down. Some engines, specially normally aspirated, will show you a difference.
