What are everyones thoughts on buying a rebuilt moter with a warranty. I have spent over 3000 and 18 months of my life learning the ins and outs of how a car works... far more valuable then my college education... but bottom line is I live, work and play out of my car and I need a reliable engine... I would be happy to support someone on here by purchasing an engine from them, but I need it to work for 100,000 miles. the first b3 went 287000 miles with no trouble. the gen 1 b6 did great for 2000 miles then the #3 cylinder went. the next engine from ACE moters in LA http://www.cncmotors.com/ was excrement, they gave me a late model engine, long story but they would not take it back. now I am at witts end!

I really appreciate everyone's help and feedback concerning my troubles, I have learned so much. but i travel every 3 days i am in a different city, I don't have a garage or any down time and it is hard tinker with your house/car when you NEED it, so I can work! there is no down time in my life.

its late im frustrated sorry for the rant...

I'll check over the stuff TominMO sugested tomorrow.

By the way FestivaGTX has been a huge help, he has been involved with every swap(not the bad one) I was out of the country for that one. I got back to a 2000 motor with a carb and a plumbing project!

    good night

Not to discourage you from running a Festiva, but with the amount of miles you travel, you might consider a new Fiesta. Gas mileage would be about the same and you could probably get very low or zero percent interest financing that would make a payment about what you are spending in repairs every month. You would also have a warranty on the whole car and not just an engine.
          You gonna race that thing?

            New coil.

The car im driving is an icon, and part of the business so as of right now a new car is not an option. I also don't have the credit rating or desire to make monthly payments as some times i leave the country for months at a time with no income. Again i appreciate every ones creative thoughts. Plus even with sll the repairs, i have spent less them $6000 since 2007 also driving over 200,000 miles, hard to buy a new car for that.

I really liked the gen 1 b6 i had that was working... could pull a trailer uphill at 65mph easy.

Your car would be alot easier to work on it if it was EFI. Would be great if we could convert it.

I like the robustness of a mechanical fuel system, electronics fail me too often, not to say carbs aren't a complicated pain too. But after 18 months of festiva classes I dont want to change the system to efi yet

I understand your reasons for staying with carb, but when your ready, I have an EFI wiring harness for you.

Sam, if you are here that weekend we will get the festy fixed up!!
In case you run into another member and want to take a whack at it
I am suspecting no or little advance due to something in the advance
system or a complete mismatch between the ECM and the disty.

If you have info like OEM numbers off both or at least what the donor
was I can have some used parts waiting if necessary. We might be looking
at the data coming and going from the ECM and diagnosing based on that.

What ever works out, I will be here!!

                    May 5th Saturday.

engine started getting even less power in 4th and 5th. I hit it with the timing lite in atlanta, The timing was set at 1cm behind TDC, (guessing that was about 10 degrees). Now the mark it is like 4cm back... do you think the timing belt could have jumped a tooth? Now to get TDC the distributor would have to be maxed out by turning it counter clockwise.

Make sure that the vac advance hose is removed and plugged to check timing. Don't know which hose is the advance one, but can determined by sucking on each. It's the one that pulls the plate rearward (clockwise). Also the barometric sensor (?) must be unplugged from the dist. Movement of timing could only have been cause by loose dist or jumped belt. Maybe your idler wheel is loose.

Ahh thanks george. Timing may be ok. Ill check with light with the right vacuum hoses plugged. Is there a "sticky" or post with how to time information?

Everything you need to know about timing a carbed festy is in post #73. Except it should be timed to 0.
