    That's the combo I use!

I was dreading it for the last couple of weeks, and finally tried yesterday. They both just popped right out. I sung hymns. I think I also shed a tear.

I got the fubared b3 and trans out yesterday... Today I'm going to do some little stuff like see if I can lift the front of the car sans powertrain, swap over some accessories to the b6, clean the engine bay, remove the subframe for powdercoating, etc etc.....

What front suspension stuff should I be doing while it's all apart? Like what's the best knucke swap or whatever that I keep hearing about? I dunno if I'll do it immediately but I minimum need new axles, new control arms, new sway bar bushings.....

The main reason oil turns black is usually not that it's coking or burning. It's absorbing particulates from the blowby gases. So the color of the oil will tell you how hard the detergents have been working, and if they get depleted you're in just as much trouble as you would if your oil has broken down.
Used oil analysis is a very handy thing though.

At 264k, 20k could be the difference in tire sizing/wear and the OE variance in odometers... it makes no difference.

pulling the original B3 with 284k that locked up and putting in an engine with 264k in it and installing a tach cluster that'll only roughly be 20k off but that's no biggie I suppose

Well, in the past week, I tore down the engine looking for the reason coolant was flowing thru the wrong parts. Turns out it was the intake gasket, so while I was in there I replaced every gasket/seal I could, even lapped the valves and replaced those seals.
And painted whatever engine parts I could.
    And replaced the radiator.
    And then the water pump.
    And fixed the siezed wipers.

Tomorrow will be finding a spot for some 6x9's, I'm thinking the cargo cover panel.

Today I replaced my stabilizer bar bushings, control arms, and rear struts. Plus oil change and air filter change.

Nice, giving the car the whole nine yard, probably the best treatment the car has had since it rolled out of the factory.

-Today I put in the drivers door I got at UPULL&PAY. I had to switch out my power mirror into the new door and put the new body panels on I got at the junk yard. Those door panels were like new!
-I also put in the new switch on the steering colum for the headlight/turnsignal/wiper. Found out the wiring was all messed up for the headlights and fixed it. So I have a used BUT good switch for the steering colum.
-Got my windshield washer working in the front.
-I broke the rear windshield wiper arm re-ajusting it. It just broke apart where it bolts on.:nono:

I cured my oil spitting. Yesterday I drove up into the mountains to Globe, about 35 miles mostly up hill. Got home found an oil mess all over under the hood. Oil was dripping off the hood. I tightened up the o-ring on the dipstick because oil was all over the front of the engine, thinking the dipstick had blown out. I pulled the oring, added heat shrink tubing to the groove, then reinstalled the oring. Nice tight dipstick now. Road tested up the mountain to Top of The World and back. No help, same problem, OIL! Today I R&R the VC siliconed the gasket and added 6 washers to the bolts on top of the old rubbers and sleeves. Back to Top of The World. Much improved, only some oil was spitting from the oil filler cap. I didn't have a flat oring that size so I added 2 thinner orings one inside the other. Monday it's 70 miles round trip back to Globe for the final test.

What the crap? That was the second time the forum ate my post.

Oh well, anyways I changed the oil with Supertech 5w30 with a Purolator Classic filter.

Was solid black from a little over 3K miles, that included at least quart top up halfway through, so either the engine is really dirty or those STP filters are garbage.
